After a nice little break from social media for a while taking care of my 3 little ones, I wanted to share this special picture. This is my mother with her firstborn (my sister!). She grew us, birthed us, taught us everything we know and sacrificed so much for us. She has been able to be present for each of her 3 grandchildren's births and is always my strongest support. After I became a mother for the first time, in the peak of covid, she rescued my failing attempts at breastfeeding my firstborn and taught me how to give more of myself to my babies. Now I know, because of her, that we are here for them. They need us more than just during pregnancy. Thank you for making me, for loving me, and for teaching me how to love our babies. 👩‍🤰👩‍⚕️👼🏽👼🏽👼🏽

Let's talk about Zinc!

Zinc is an essential trace mineral and must be obtained through the diet. Zinc is found in shellfish, beef and other red meats, as well as nuts, and legumes. Zinc plays an important role in several body systems and over 100 enzymes in the body require zinc to function. Zinc is necessary for normal growth and development, immune and neurological function, proper sense of taste and smell, and maintaining the structure of cell membranes, as well as protecting them from oxidative damage.

Zinc deficiency is associated with growth failure and increased susceptibility to infection and skin inflammation, diarrhea, alopecia, and behavioral disturbances.

We also see excess levels of zinc if supplementation is not balanced with copper. Zinc and copper go hand in hand. Supplementation of zinc is often done with a ratio of zinc:copper where both are supported. We can check zinc and copper levels through blood to check for balances.

Blood sugar control is so important, don't forget to follow your grandmother's advice!

FIBER, FIBER, FIBER! >35 grams a day!!
Good food sources of soluble fiber include apples, artichokes, asparagus, bananas, barley, beans, berries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, dark leafy greens, legumes, lentils, nuts, oats, oranges, pears, peppers, and squash.

Let's talk about blood sugar control.

The increase in metabolic disease is DIRECTLY related to what we eat and lack of exercise. We KNOW that diabetes and pre-diabetes can be reversible if we are able to change our lifestyle that changes our cellular function. Sometimes there are nutritional deficiencies that an integrative medical doctor help diagnose and correct contributing as well.

After spending a couple weeks with a continuous glucose monitor recently, I realize the importance of some of these important glucose "hacks" that prevent insulin spikes and the development of insulin resistance. Of course, the importance of fiber is incredibly important, and where do we get that? Good food sources of soluble fiber include apples, artichokes, asparagus, bananas, barley, beans, berries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, dark leafy greens, legumes, lentils, nuts, oats, oranges, pears, peppers, and squash.

Let's talk about exercise!

Here is a recent picture of me Hiking in Shenandoah National Park while 26 weeks pregnant (one of those rare 20,000 steps days)!

Regular exercise during pregnancy benefits you and your fetus in these key ways:
Reduces back pain
Eases constipation
May decrease your risk of gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and cesarean birth
Promotes healthy weight gain during pregnancy
Improves your overall fitness and strengthens your heart and blood vessels

There are very rare reasons why your OB provider wouldn't recommend exercise: typically if you have an underlying heart or lung disease, a Cerclage, are expecting twins or triplets (or more) with risk factors for preterm labor, have a Placenta previa after 26 weeks of pregnancy, have Preterm labor during this pregnancy or ruptured membranes (your water has broken), have Preeclampsia or pregnancy-induced high blood pressure, or if you have Severe anemia.
