Reid Health Community Engagement has awarded nearly $100,000 in grant funding to 21 local nonprofits, schools, and community groups.

This second grant cycle of the year focuses on improving physical activity, nutrition, and weight by improving community health, encouraging healthy choices, and reducing disparities related to activity and nutrition.

"By supporting programs that improve access to nutritious food and physical activity, we're empowering local organizations to make lasting, positive change in our communities," said Jess Przybysz, Reid Health’s Community Benefit and Engagement Director.

Funding decisions were based on factors including access to exercise opportunities, obesity and sedentary rates in adults, and food insecurity levels among children and adults.

For more information on the Reid Health Community Engagement Grant Program, read the news release: https://www.reidhealth.org/press-releases/community-engagement-awards-second-grant-cycle-focused-on-programs-for-physical-activity-nutrition-and-weight.

As you check off the school supply list and prepare for a new year, don’t forget to add an important back-to-school item: making sure your child is up to date on their vaccines. Immunizations play a key role in protecting your child’s health and are required at certain grade levels in Indiana and Ohio.

Here's a quick guide to common questions parents ask this time of year. ⬇️

Why is it important to keep up with immunizations?
✔️ The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends following an immunization schedule to safely and effectively protect against serious illnesses. For school-age children, vaccines help your child to stay healthy and protect others.

How can they prevent illness and promote wellness?
✔️ Vaccines train your child’s immune system to recognize and fight off harmful diseases — without causing illness. Even if they’re exposed later, vaccinated kids are far less likely to get seriously sick. Staying current on vaccines supports long-term health and wellness.

What if my child is behind on shots?
📅 If your child has missed some vaccines, don’t worry. Your provider can follow a CDC-recommended catch-up schedule tailored to their age and health needs.

Is it safe for my child to have more than one shot in a visit?
✔️ Yes, it’s safe — and often necessary — for your child to get more than one vaccine at a time. Some vaccines require multiple doses or boosters and combining them helps keep your child protected without unnecessary delays. Keeping up with the recommended schedule is a simple way to help your child stay healthy and active.

Where can I get a list of shots by age, so I know my child is up-to-date?
🔗 An immunization chart is available on our website at https://www.reidhealth.org/services/for-the-parents or the CDC’s website at https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/imz-schedules/adolescent-easyread.html.

Does my college- or military-bound child still need their shots?
✔️ Yes! Students heading to college or joining the military often have specific vaccine requirements, especially if they’ll be living in shared spaces like dorms or barracks.
Check the specific requirements for their school or branch, keep their records handy, and talk to their provider to make sure they’re fully protected, particularly if they have health conditions or plan to travel.

Have questions?
✔️ If you're unsure what vaccines your child needs or just want to double-check, your child’s provider is your best resource.

🌼 Alexis Abernathy-Hobson, an RN with our Critical Care Unit (CCU), had an emotional reunion with a former patient, Joe Toler, during a surprise celebration to recognize her as the DAISY Award recipient for July.

"You look so good," Alexis said behind hands wiping away tears.

"And I feel so good. I sure look a lot better than the last time too," Joe said.

While in the CCU, Joe experienced a cardiac arrest. Alexis recognized the signs and acted without hesitation. She then stayed after her shift to provide comfort to his family, and over the next few days as his nurse, continued to offer encouragement.

Joe’s daughter, Holly Griffin, nominated Alexis for the exceptional care and compassion she provided.

"Alexis is our literal Reid angel," Holly said.

For more than 11 years, our Ambassador for the month of August has been a constant presence at Reid Health Primary & Specialty Care – Cambridge City.

As a Certified Medical Assistant and Clinical Lead for the practice, Sara Munchel has had the opportunity to build special bonds with her patients.

“I love the family practice setting. I enjoy being able to care for infants all the way up to geriatrics,” Munchel said.

“Being at the same office for so long, I’ve watched many kids grow up over the years. I feel like they’re extended family when I know so much about them and they ask me about my family. It makes me feel good when returning patients ask for me to room them.”

Area artist Tom Butters brings a lifetime of creativity — from his Midwest roots to his career as a national advertising executive and racecar driver — to the newest exhibit at Reid Health’s MacDowell Gallery.

“Elevation” features Butters’ oil and acrylic paintings, on display now through Oct. 31.

“Many of my pictures are ideas or stories, not representations,” Butters said. “The challenge is figuring out something whimsical to say or show. It might only be whimsical to me — but I hope you’ll get it.”

Read more about how Butters went from a fast-paced advertising career on Madison Avenue to the calm of his family’s rural Indiana farm — and how he renewed his passion for painting and creativity along the way:

Reid Health Comprehensive Bone & Joint Center is excited to welcome MiKaiyla Erfman, PA, to the orthopedics team. MiKaiyla earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Cincinnati’s College of Medicine and her master’s degree in physician assistant studies from Mount St. Joseph University, both in Cincinnati, Ohio.

“I first knew I wanted to go into medicine when I was a kid going to medical appointments with my grandma. Her providers were not only incredibly great with her but with me as well. They knew I’d be the one helping to care for her and they took the time to explain everything in a way we both could understand. I knew I wanted to be a provider who was able to show as much knowledge and compassion as they showed us.

“I’m grateful to be part of my patients’ health journey, and I want to hear their story and get to know them. I love when patients come with questions and I’m able to solve problems and find the best solution for each person.”

Our Family Medicine Residency Program is excited to welcome six new physicians to Richmond as they take the next step in their careers! Over three years, they’ll gain a range of experience in family medicine across our system before moving on to start their own practices.

Dr. Vikram Gill received his medical degree from the Marian University Wood College of Osteopathic Medicine. An avid gardener since he was a kid, Dr. Gill grows everything from herbs and vegetables to fruit trees such as peaches, pears, and plums.

“I love figuring out what thrives in each season, and there’s nothing better than cooking dinner with ingredients you just picked that morning.

“I first knew I wanted to go into medicine when I realized I could combine my love for science with my desire to genuinely connect with people, but it was during a shadowing experience in college that everything truly came into focus.

“I spent a lot of time following and learning from a family physician who treated multiple generations of the same families — newborns to grandparents — and what struck me most wasn’t the textbook knowledge or procedures, but the quiet moments of connection. I watched as he greeted each patient not just by name, but with warmth, familiarity, and a sense of continuity that made the clinic feel more like a living room than a medical office.

“I saw what it meant to care for the whole person — not just their symptoms. He explained diagnoses in plain language, paused when patients hesitated, and asked about their jobs, their kids, even their recent camping trip. It was medicine, but it was also mentorship, advocacy, and community. That experience stayed with me. I didn’t just want to solve problems. I wanted to be someone people could turn to, grow with, and trust.

Help us welcome Dr. Gill to the community! And learn more about our Family Medicine Residency Program at https://www.reidhealth.org/reid-family-medicine-residency-program.

Reid Health Foundation’s first Adventure Course brought fun, fitness, and purpose — all in support of local student-athletes and their health.

Nearly 200 participants took on 15 obstacles across a scenic three-mile course at Indiana University East on June 21.

Thanks to their energy and the generosity of our sponsors, the event raised $35,000 to support our Athletic Training Program. At no cost to schools, Reid’s athletic trainers provide high-quality care to student-athletes at nine area high schools and IU East — offering ongoing support at practices and games. They’re the first line of care, handling injury prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation.
