Setting habits and staying driven is the key to meeting (and maintaining) your wellness goals!

I love how this quote by former olympic athlete, Jim Ryan, sums up the intersection of motivation and habit-setting ⭐️

What small shifts can you implement throughout the week ahead to help you meet your health and wellness goals for December?

Are you familiar with the method of Box Breathing? Let me introduce you!

Box breathing is a quick and easy way to reset your mind and body when you are feeling frazzled. I love doing box breathing when I feel overwhelmed or before I take on a challenging task...like jumping into a brand new year!

This is a 4-part breath, and each part is 4 counts. One round of box breathing would be done as follows: Inhale for 4, hold your breath for 4, exhale for 4, hold your breath for 4. Complete 5-9 rounds or until you feel your mind and body starting to relax. I've included a 2-minute box breathing recording for you to use for guidance.

With the start of a new calendar year we often face big changes, new opportunities and pressure to set new goals...and sometimes all of that can leave us feeling overwhelmed. Let this be a tool to help calm your nervous system and bring ease to your day!

Everyone give a warm welcome to Julia Stewart, WellCommit's newest Private Yoga and Group Mobility Instructor!

"When she teaches, Julia pays close attention to her students. She offers specific alignment cues to inform practitioners about how they can manipulate sensations in their bodies and, in this way, remain present in their practice.

As a student at VCU School of Arts, Julia loved to paint bodies in motion. After completing a soccer stadium mural of players in action, an oil painting of a Tyson-Holyfield boxing match, and a mural rendition of John Singer Sargent’s “El Jaleo”, she decided to segue from studying bodies as subject matter to studying the practice of yoga for herself. In 2021 she completed her 200-hour teacher training with Humble Haven Yoga, and ever since she has been teaching private lessons as well as corporate and studio classes. She’s received a teaching certificate in Yin Yoga as well as specialized training in teaching yoga to children with diverse needs. She enjoys the postgraduate study of Anatomy and Physiology, and she expects to continue forever learning more about how our bodies work"

You will have the chance to book private 1:1 yoga sessions with Julia beginning in January!

Julia will also be leading our new upcoming series called Strength, Balance, and Flexibility which kicks off Thursday, February 6th at 1:30 PM! More details below👇

Let's break 3 of the most commonly shared myths about meditation 🧘‍♂️

1️⃣ It's supposed to be peaceful | While peace & quiet can certainly help, meditation can be practiced anywhere! The peace is something we create internally, even when things around us feel busy or hectic.

2️⃣ It takes too much time to be effective | Your meditation sessions can be as short or as long as you need them to be. Whether you have 2 minutes to sit & breathe or a full hour, taking time to stop and connect with your breath can offer a multitude of health benefits such as a calmed nervous system.

3️⃣ You are doing it wrong if you can't turn off your thoughts | Thinking is what we do, and tuning out external (and internal) distractions is a part of the meditative process. It's less about turning off your thoughts and more about acknowledging what comes up, and refocusing your attention on your breath and the present moment.

As we gear up for Thanksgiving, I wanted to share some tips to help you stay on track with your healthy eating habits 🙌

🌟 Don't show up hungry to the party!! You will go crazy on the holiday spreads if your hunger is raging. Eat protein before any holiday gathering to help stabilize your blood sugar and keep you in control of making better choices. Deli meat wrapped around a slice of cheese or 1-2 hard boiled eggs are simple ways to up your protein pre-party.

🌟 Keep track of your food and beverage intake. We make better choices when we have to be accountable to our actions. You're less likely to mindlessly consume holiday treats if you know you have to keep track of your consumption. You bite it, you write it (or log it into your app). Apps that my clients like the most are MyFitnessPal and Lifesum.

🌟 Stay on top of your workouts. A great way for us to feel sluggish is to eat too much and skip our workouts. Don't do this to yourself! Find time on the weekend to schedule your workouts for the upcoming week. This will be especially helpful when you have holiday parties and events that conflict with your usual times that you exercise. Commit to being one step ahead with your alternate plan so that you can stay in the groove of your exercise regimen.

What are some of your tried & true methods for maintaining your health & wellness goals during the holidays? Let me know if the comments! 👇👇

Fall is the best season to get outside and enjoy a walk around your neighborhood 🍁

Here are 5 helpful ways to optimize your daily walks👇👇

1️⃣ Get out and move in the morning. The longer you wait to exercise, the more likely you are to lose motivation to get it done.

2️⃣ Recruit a walking buddy or find a walking group. And yes, your dog counts!! Using external accountability where you have to show up for someone else is a great way for you to follow through on your walking goals.

3️⃣ Walk for 10 minutes after dinner each evening. Studies have shown that this can lower your blood sugar and help with digesting your food. The better your food is digested before bedtime, the better you will sleep! Our bodies work best when they don't multi-task, so you will be able to sleep better if your body isn't distracted by digesting dinner.

4️⃣ Keep track of your walks. Ways to do this would be to use your phone or watch to count steps, miles, or minutes you walked. Take this a step further and write it on a calendar or in a notebook. Our brains love to see data as a metric for progress! Seeing a consistent string of days you've walked will encourage you to stick to the routine.

5️⃣ Listen to a podcast or some of your favorite music. This is a great way to keep your mind stimulated as your body moves, especially if you are walking solo. I personally love the Mel Robbins podcast as my go-to for all topics health and wellness. Here is an episode that discusses the benefits of walking that you can listen to while you're on your next walk 🙂 The Shocking Science and Benefits of Taking a Simple Walk with Dr. Shane O'Mara
