The Indiana Department of Health is reporting an increase in infant deaths this month caused by unsafe sleep environments. On average, Indiana loses two infants a week to unsafe sleep, but more than 10 deaths have already occurred in August.

Here are tips for parents and caregivers by remembering the ABCs of Safe Sleep:
✔️Alone: Baby sleeps alone, in the same room as a caregiver
✔️Back: Always place baby on their back
✔️Crib: Use a crib with only a tight-fitting sheet, no pillows, blankets, bumper pads, or stuffed animals

Unsafe sleep situations often involve:
❌ Co-sleeping with an adult
❌ Blankets and pillows in the crib
❌ Baby placed on their stomach

Every sleep matters, including naps. Please share to help raise awareness and keep infants safe.

We urge parents to take steps to protect the health and safety of their infants following a surge this month of deaths caused by unsafe sleep environments.

Unsafe situations often involve co-sleeping with an adult (such as in a bed), blankets and pillows in the baby’s crib, or the baby being placed on his or her stomach to sleep.

Remember the ABCs of safe sleep:
1️⃣ Alone: Babies should be placed alone with caregiver nearby in the same room
2️⃣ Back: On his or her back
3️⃣ Crib: With only a tight-fitting sheet, no bumper pads, pillows, blankets or stuffed animals

Retirement wasn’t turning out the way Dave Steinard thought it would.

Sure, a bit of back pain was to be expected after a 30-plus-year career as a carpenter, but this was different.

The Fayette County resident was doubling and then tripling up on the recommended doses of over-the-counter pain relievers, but he might as well have just been eating candy, for all the good it did him.

The pain kept him awake a lot. He couldn’t bend over to tie his shoes or put on his socks.

Dave had just about given up hope of ever finding real relief from his back pain. Then a friend told him about the Ortho Walk-in NOW service at our Comprehensive Bone & Joint Center.

“A year after surgery, I'm a new man,” Dave said. “My life has changed to the point where I can work in my shop or on the farm for an eight-hour period without having to cry or sit down or lay down on the ground in the woods and pray for my pain to go away. I get up in the mornings and want to do things. I think about it the night before – what I'm going to do tomorrow – and before surgery I was thinking about all the things I couldn't do.

“It's just a miracle.”

Make it five in a row! 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆

We’re proud to be nationally recognized for the fifth straight year for our high-quality stroke care with three Heart Association achievement awards!

In the U.S., stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of disability. Early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability, and accelerating recovery times.

“Our fifth consecutive award reflects not just a milestone, but a steadfast promise to our patients — that every person who walks through our doors will receive the highest standard of stroke care possible,” said Dr. Jordan Raynor, Reid neurologist and Stroke Medical Director.

“This recognition is a testament to the relentless dedication, expertise, and compassion of our entire stroke team.”

Take a moment for your health and schedule your screening today – it could save your life.

Free prostate cancer screenings are from 3:30–6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16, located in the Reid Health Oncology Conference Room, 1100 Reid Parkway.

Prostate cancer affects 1 in 8 men, yet many cases can be treated successfully when found early.

Who should consider screening:

• African American men, especially over 65
• High-risk men ages 40–45 with a family history

Screenings might include a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and/or a digital re**al exam (DRE).

There’s no cost, no referral. An appointment is needed. Reserve your spot by calling (765) 985-8847. For information on screenings available at Reid, visit https://www.reidhealth.org/screenings.

East-Central Indiana will soon have 11 new paramedics serving their communities thanks to the inaugural class of our EMS Training Institute’s Paramedic Program!

Everyone who began the program nearly a year ago not only completed it, but each passed their final exam on the first attempt.

Congratulations to:

• Zaccheaus Allen, Hunter Cougill, Denzel Durham, Caleb Harmon, Samuel Weller, and Benjamin Willey of the Richmond Fire Department
• Lydia Kniesly, Taylor Marcum, Blake Taylor, and Brandy Williams of Reid Health EMS
• Peyton Renforth of New Castle/Henry County EMS

The Paramedic Program is an 11-month course that begins each year in September and runs until August. It includes classwork as well as clinical shifts in which students participate in hospital and field-based experiences. They also get direct interaction with physicians and the program’s medical director as well as anesthesiology clinical time. The program also offers mental health support for the students.

Applications are being accepted now for the next cohort, which will begin on Sept. 4.

🌟 Volunteer Spotlight: Sebastian Dam 🌟
Sebastian Dam wanted to make a difference in his community, so he joined our Junior Volunteer program. The yearlong experience led the Centerville High School graduate to discover an interest in healthcare.

💬 “Volunteering has helped me realize I want to pursue a career in the medical field."

This summer, Sebastian continues to serve as an Adult Volunteer at Reid. This fall, he’ll attend DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana.

During his time as a Junior Volunteer, Sebastian was assigned to the Information Desk and the Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU). His said his favorite memory during that time was drawing and decorating the Information Desk.

✔️ His advice to current or future Junior Volunteers?
"Enjoy the small things."

Sebastian says volunteering has been a fun and rewarding experience — he enjoys helping people and making new friends.

His family includes his parents, Gregory Dam and Jennifer Olson, and his sister, Sylvia.

Thank you, Sebastian, for your dedication to your community! 👏
