Horse and Tree

Everybody who’s anybody longs to be a tree—
or ride one, hair blown to froth.
That’s why horses were invented, and saddles
tooled with singular stars.

This is why we braid their harsh manes
as if they were children, why children
might fear a carousel at first for the way
it insists that life is round. No,

we reply, there is music and then it stops;
the beautiful is always rising and falling.
We call and the children sing back 'one more time.'
In the tree the luminous sap ascends.

Give Me Your Hand (Before the Beginning)

God speaks to each of us before we are made
then walks with us silently out of the night.
These are the words, the numinous words,
we hear before we begin:
You, called forth by your senses,
reach to the edge of your Longing.
Become my body.
Grow like a fire behind things
so their shadows spread
and cover me completely.
Let everything into you: Beauty and Terror.
Keep going: no feeling lasts forever.
Don’t lose touch with me.
Nearby is the land
they call Life.
You will recognize it by its intensity.

No More Workshops

I am giving a workshop on being nobody. It's free. It's happening now. You have already joined. We're about half way through, always. Are you enjoying the workshop? Of course not. Yet you are happy for no reason. Who is the teacher? No one. What is the teaching? Not this, not this. Just observe what flows in and out, and be grateful. There will be no more workshops. You are finished now. A purple crocus emerges from the snow. Deep in the woods at 5 A.M., a Barred Owl asks Who? Who are you? From some space of delight and courage where you've never been before, a melting transparency inside silence itself awakens, and from that trembling stillness the question arises, "What if nothing is wrong?" Now you remember the three precious talismans you received for the journey just before you were born. You still carry them in a deerskin medicine pouch pressed against your left ni**le: this breath, this moment, this heartbeat. And you recall the voice that whispered, "With these invisible jewels, nothing is impossible." You feel strangely ready for the pilgrimage. But there is nowhere to go. The earth is a good place to be. So what if your heart is broken? So what if your heart is broken by the hummingbird who drinks from a frozen rose this Winter morning?

Rest

In the first state of rest is the sense of stopping, of giving up on what we have been doing or how have been being. In the second, is the sense of slowly coming home, the physical journey into the body’s uncoerced and unbullied self, as if trying to remember the way or even the destination itself. In the third state is a sense of healing and self-forgiveness and of arrival. In the fourth state, deep in the primal exchange of the breath, is the give and the take, the blessing and the being blessed and the ability to delight in both. The fifth stage is a sense of absolute readiness and presence, a delight in and an anticipation of the world and all its forms; a sense of being the meeting itself between inner and outer, and that receiving and responding occur in one spontaneous moment.
[...]
Rested, we are ready for the world but not held hostage by it, rested we care again for the right things and the right people in the right way. In rest we reestablish the goals that make us more generous, more courageous, more of an invitation, someone we want to remember, and someone others would want to remember too."

Darkest Before Dawn

Three days into the new year,
and despite the lack of adequate light,
our white phalaenopsis orchid
has eased open a third delicate bloom.

Perhaps coaxed by the warmth
of the woodstove a few feet away,
the orchid thrives in its tiny pot
shaped like the shell of a nautilus,
sending out new stems and glossy leaves,
its aerial roots— green at the tips—
reaching upward like tentacles
to sip the morning air. These blooms
stir something too long asleep in me,
proving with stillness and slow growth
what I haven't been able to trust
these past few months—that hope
and grace still reign in certain sectors
of the living world, that there are laws
which can never be overturned
by hateful words or the wishes
of power-hungry men. Be patient,
this orchid seems to say, and reveal
your deepest self even in the middle
of winter, even in the darkness
before the coming dawn.

Perfect Song

I remember walking through the morning
after a night of heavy snow and drink
with headphones on and they played
me the most perfect song: no one
was awake and I was hungover
young as clean as a piano
I thought and at any moment
someone might fall in love with me I was
that woven into the electric
cold bright air and for weeks
after I went through the album
in search of the song but could not
find it and later much later I saw
that what I had taken to be the song
was in fact the joyous concordance of
a moment that would not come again

What’s in the Temple?

In the quiet spaces of my mind a thought lies still, but ready to spring.
It begs me to open the door so it can walk about.
The poets speak in obscure terms, pointing madly at the unsayable.
The sages say nothing, but walk ahead, patting their thigh, calling for us to follow.
The monk sits pen in hand, poised to explain the cloud of unknowing.
The seeker seeks, just around the corner from the truth.
If she stands still, it will catch up with her.

Pause with us here awhile.
Put your ear to the wall of your heart.
Listen for the whisper of knowing there.
Love will touch you if you are very still.

If I say the word God, people run away.
They’ve been frightened, sat upon till the spirit cried uncle.
Now they play hide and seek with somebody they can’t name.
They know God’s out there looking for them, and they want to be found,
but there is all this stuff in the way.

I can’t talk about God and make any sense,
and I can’t not talk about God and make any sense.
So you and I talk about the weather, and we are talking about God.

I miss the old temples where we could hang out with God.
Still, we have pet pounds where we can feel love draped in warm fur,
and sense the whole tragedy of life and death.
We can see there the consequences of carelessness,
and feel there the yapping urgency of life that wants to be lived.
The only things lacking are the frankincense and myrrh.

We don’t build many temples anymore.
Maybe we learned that the sacred can’t be contained.
Or maybe it can’t be sustained inside a building.
Buildings crumble.
It’s the spirit that lives on.

If you had a temple in the secret spaces of your heart,
what would you worship there?
What would you bring to sacrifice?
What would be behind the curtain in the holy of holies?

Go there now.
Look behind the curtain

Every

Every ditch or stream or river the train crosses.
Every ploughed field, every row of trees.
Every square church tower in the distance.
Every minute of sunshine, every shadow.
Every wisp of cloud in the wide, blue, East Anglian sky.
Every day. Every day that's left.
