One of our dear patients had a simple but powerful wish: to feel the joy of the casino one more time. Thanks to our Shirkey Hospice “What If” program and the incredible support of our team, that dream came true with a visit to Ameristar Casino.

Surrounded by his loving nurses and a dedicated volunteer, he spent the day laughing, smiling, and dancing to the sounds of the slot machines. There was excitement in the air, a delicious lunch shared together, and peaceful contentment on the ride home.

💜 Moments like these are what the What If program is all about—finding ways to honor the passions and joy that make life meaningful, even near the end of it.

A huge thank you to everyone who made this day possible. The smiles we saw and the memories we made will stay with us always.

🌟 What If… we danced again?

On October 17th, we hosted a cozy s’more and fire pit party at Shirkey Nursing and Rehab—complete with hot chocolate, gooey marshmallows, and good company.

But the most heartwarming moment? One of our hospice patients and her granddaughter, Makayla, shared a dance under the stars—something they used to do often. It was such a special memory brought to life again.

✨ Surrounded by family, friends, and flickering firelight, she felt the joy of moving, laughing, and living in the moment.

This Friday the 17th, we brought a special memory to life for one of our patients who once loved camping and sharing s’mores around a fire.

So, we made it happen—right here at Shirkey Nursing and Rehab. 🔥 With the glow of a cozy campfire, hot chocolate in hand, and s’mores all around, it was an evening filled with laughter, music, and connection. Family, fellow residents, and our team all joined in the joy.

🌼 What If... we could bring a little more nature into her journey?

One of our cherished patients has always loved flowers, the outdoors, and peaceful places filled with beauty. So we made a What If come true—with a visit to Powell Gardens in Kansas City.

She spent the day exploring trails lined with autumn blooms, admiring lily pads floating in serene ponds, and soaking in the peaceful beauty of the chapel nestled on the grounds. The geese, water features, and crisp fall air brought her so much joy.

On the way home, we stopped at The Feed House in Lexington for a cozy lunch—good food, good company, and a day full of smiles.

Because at Shirkey Hospice, we believe it’s never too late to experience something meaningful—one more time. 💜
