Have you heard of lymphatic drainage self-massage? It involves gently manipulating certain areas of the body to move fluid away from your tissue and towards the lymph nodes. This is great if you have chronic congestion, headaches, swollen lymph nodes, or swelling in the abdomen, hands, and legs!
We've added some ways to do this yourself right at home. But before you start, we recommend doing this right after a shower when your body is warm, do some deep breathing to relax, and touch with a light, gentle pressure. If you are someone who experiences blood clots, cellulitis, heart or kidney disease, skin damage, tuberculosis, or lymphedema, please consult your primary healthcare provider before trying this.
With your right palm, press very lightly on your center chest and out to the left armpit. Repeat the motion on the opposite side. Do this ten times on each side and remember: we only need to access the skin here. If you are pressing into the muscle, the pressure is too firm!
Next, place your hands on either side of the neck, and with your finger pads resting below your ears (by the back of your jaw), move your fingers in a circle, gently moving the skin downwards. Repeat this five to ten times.
Move to your forehead, as there are lymph vessels all over your face! Perform the same circular motion, gently, above your eyebrows, moving downward to your temples. Repeat at least ten times.
Next, with your finger pads on your cheeks, make that gentle, circular motion. Move up and down the cheeks and cheekbones about ten times.
And we'll finish where we started by returning to the sweeping motion across the chest. With your right palm, press gently on your center chest and out to the left armpit. Repeat this on the opposite side for ten total times.
After your manual lymphatic drainage, it is normal to feel fatigue, headache, or nausea from flushing the fluids through your body. Stay hydrated throughout the day to continue to promote drainage.
This simple and impactful technique is worth working into your regular self-care schedule!
