A trending phrase is: "listen to your body." Sure. But the second part of that is also important and often gets ignored. That is: what is your physical response actually telling you? What is the root of the physical reaction? For example: sometimes the desire to rest is a sign to rest, and other times the desire to rest is the body naturally resisting growth and it's best to keep going. Discernment can be key.

I hope you all enjoyed Juneteenth. It is a sacred day of honoring freedom gained and still sought. I was glad to have been a part of facilitating ceremony for the holiday in Church Hill.

Dozens gathered outside St. John’s Episcopal Church in Richmond’s Church Hill for their 5th annual Juneteenth Celebration Thursday morning.

Every negative doesn't need to be turned into a positive. Sometimes, we just need our space to reflect on the negative. Then it can get to a point though when we're compelled to ask ourselves: how is staying in that space working for me? Do the disadvantages outweigh the advantages? If so, what kind of mindset WILL work for me?

A question we hear often is: "So what exactly is Pastoral Care?"

Another more commonly used term for it is Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy. Essentially, it's an approach to counseling that invites the client to bring their spiritual beliefs to the table to be a part of their healing process, IF they so desire.

Multiple studies have supported the idea that integrating spirituality into counseling is immensely beneficial for clients. Our counselors have all been through specialized training to purposefully explore any of your spiritual and/or religious beliefs, practices, and worldviews, in the context of therapy.

Another question we get is "I'm an Athiest? Can I still come?" The answer is a resonding "Absolutely!" We are here to care for ALL clients in whatever way you are most comfortable. If you've been on the fence about calling us, make today your first step in your healing journey! 804-282-8332

You don't need to be perfect. You don't even necessarily need to feel "ready." Just start.

Start that project you've been dreaming of. Start planning that life-giving trip. Start investing in your mental health with one (just one) counseling session.

Whatever it is that that tiny inner voice is telling you to do...just start it.

Even with less years of experience, this rings very true. Sometimes, people just need loved ones that care about them and are willing to have a genuine conversation. Uncles and aunties, siblings, coaches that show up, good spiritual caregivers that can give the gift of presence. Let's remember to be that light for somebody.

There can be stigma around men seeking a listening ear in the form of professional mental health care. I have heard a number of times statements along the lines of "I don't really need this" or "I wouldn't really have come unless..." Sometimes, it has to get to the point of being court ordered, dragged in by a spouse, job recommended or mandated for men to reluctantly agree to sit in the chair. Finding a safe place to express yourself is not a sign of weakness though. It's a sign that we live in community and understand ourselves and the world better within the context of relationships.

Glad to be a part of the VIPCare crew!

Meet Jabriel!

I recently sat down with this amazing Resident Counselor to learn a bit more about him. Jabriel is currently accepting new clients with NO WAIT LIST. He is truly a gem and we are so lucky to have him at VIPCare. Call to schedule a consult with him today!

Question 1: What made you want to become a mental health counselor?
Answer: The desire to work with people to bring out the best in themselves and their communities!

Question 2: Why does the aspect of "Spiritually Integrated Therapy" interest you? Why do you think it's beneficial to have a therapist who can invite your faith beliefs into the conversation?
Answer: I appreciate the holistic aim of Spiritually Integrated Therapy. It seeks to care for the whole person, which secular counseling may miss due in part sometimes to the counselors lack of knowledge, interest, or skill in engaging spirituality and religion.

Question 3: What do you like to do for fun? Do you have any hobbies?
Answer: I love reading and exploring nature.

Question 4: Tell me something controversial.
Answer: I have never understood the desire for unsweetened tea other than health-related concerns.

On the first Friday of each month, bring your lunch for fellowship, a brief presentation by an expert on the day's topic, and a discussion on the ways we encounter the issue in parish ministry. We will wrap up by 1:30. For more info, visit www.vipcare.org/firstfridays
