A hospital death, surrounded by beeping machines and bright lights, is often what comes to mind when we recall the Hollywood version of death. But more and more often in recent years, people are choosing to die in their homes if given the option. And we at Crossover Doula Services have witnessed and assisted in beautiful home deaths that reflect the wishes of the individual.
But why choose to die at home? The reason is different for everyone, but some common reasons include more physical and emotional comfort, family reasons, and overall peace. You can choose to die in the comfort of a familiar space where you know you won’t be rushed, interrupted, or uncomfortable. Your family can grieve how they best need to without the concern of anyone they do not choose being witness to this vulnerable moment. Pets can be present to provide comfort to you and your loved ones. Time can be taken to perform rituals and for final goodbyes.
If you do have to or wish to be in the hospital, bringing comforts from home like a favorite blanket or a calming soundtrack to replace the noise of a busy ward can make huge differences.
