disAbility Law Center of Virginia

disAbility Law Center of Virginia The disAbility Law Center of Virginia or dLCV is the designated Protection and Advocacy organization of Virginia.

Our vision is a Commonwealth free of legal barriers for individuals with disabilities. The disAbility Law Center of Virginia (“dLCV”) advocates for and protects the legal rights of persons with disabilities. We do this through education, training, the promotion of self-advocacy skills for people with disabilities, and through information and referral services. We also provide direct advocacy services in particular cases that fall within our Strategic Goals and Focus Areas.

✅ We’ll train you.
✅ You’ll make a difference.

Join us for a short virtual training on Thursday, October 23 at 12:00 PM to learn how to get involved!

Can’t make it live? No problem—we’ll send out a recording afterward!

It’s time for a change. Please complete the below survey for each polling location you visit on voting day!

Recently, dLCV advocates conducted a monitoring visit at a youth facility in Virginia.

During the visit, our team met with staff and connected with residents to help ensure that the rights of young people with disabilities are respected and protected. We were also encouraged to learn that the facility no longer uses the emergency restraint chair.

Monitoring visits like these are one of the many ways we work to promote dignity, independence, and equal treatment across Virginia

At dLCV, we know that meaningful change is possible when our community comes together. That’s why our volunteers are at the heart of our mission. Right now, we especially need YOUR HELP to ensure the 2025 elections are accessible to all!

As a polling place volunteer, you will conduct surveys to ensure polling locations are accessible for Virginians with disabilities. dLCV will compile this data to determine what changes are needed; and share this information with the Department of Elections in order to improve voting accessibility for all.

A few minutes of your time can make a real difference for hundreds of Virginians, so sign up to volunteer now!

Today is the anniversary of the signing of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act! This act prohibited discrimination against people with disabilities in federally-funded activities and programs, and paved the way for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). However, the road to accessibility was not any easy one. Activists around the country held sit-ins and other protests to pressure the government to sign and implement Section 504.

On this day, the 52nd anniversary of the Act, we celebrate the progress that has been made and honor the zealous advocacy of the activists before us.
