"If I can help somebody, I feel like I'm living my faith."

Dave Bucheit doesn't have any medical certification or very much Spanish vocabulary, but he's a prime example of how a heart for helping others makes a big difference at CrossOver. Dave primarily serves as a financial screener, weeding through lots of paperwork and forms to ensure that patients' applications are complete and verified. His behind-the-scenes support is critical to getting patients access to the care that is offered at CrossOver. His son, John Bucheit, Pharm.D., who oversees our Pharm D program through a collaborative agreement with VCU Health, sees the impact that Dave's service has when those patients come through the clinic. We're grateful to the Bucheits for their commitment and care!

It's National Pharmacy Week!

CrossOver's Community Pharmacy distributed more than 33,000 prescriptions last year, serving CrossOver patients, as well as patients at other charitable clinics in the area. We're grateful to our dedicated pharmacy volunteers and staff, and for the strong support of organizations such as Direct Relief, Rx Partnership, and the Virginia Health Care Foundation for helping ensure patients are able to access the medications they need to manage their healthcare needs.

"Every patient is a story. Not just an illness."

Dr. Fornaris' deep care and understanding that the care we offer to patients, isn't just a patching up and sending them on their way. It's entering into their story and supporting their ability to flourish.

We were glad to honor Dr. Fornaris with a 2025 Compassionate Care Award in recognition of his generous and committed service at CrossOver.

It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Volunteer nurses Judy Collins, RN, WHNP (left) and Kathy Barksdale, RN (right) hosted an information table at our Henrico clinic to provide our patients the health education they need to learn to do regular self breast exams, and what to expect at their annual mammogram.

We're grateful for our volunteers who go above and beyond to care for our patients and make sure they have the health education they need!

Mio is one of several Bonner Scholars at the University of Richmond who volunteer 10 hours a week at CrossOver. A senior biology major from Chicago, IL, Mio has been serving at CrossOver since her freshman year. She intends to pursue medical school in the future, and said has gained a lot of experience in her multiple roles at CrossOver, where she's served as a financial screener, front desk patient check-in, and now as a medical scribe.

"I've learned so much here--it's been a good opportunity to give to the community, but I've gained so much back in experience. CrossOver is a place for you to grow and learn--there are hard days and hard cases, but it's an opportunity to grow more emotionally aware and understand the things that people are struggling with that you can't see—to strengthen your empathy for others," Mio wisely said.

CrosssOver has partnered with the Bonner Scholars program for more than 20 years. Blake Stack, who serves as the Sr. Associate Director of Student Engagement at the
University of Richmond-Bonner Center for Civic Engagement reflected on the partnership: "It’s amazing to think about the fact that CrossOver has welcomed UR students into their work for over two decades! Whether they're preparing to work in public health or clinical settings, students walk away from their experience with CrossOver staff with a better understanding of what a just and equitable healthcare system could look like, and we’re tremendously grateful. Your care for the community extends to each and every student that walks through your doors, and it’s a privilege to work alongside you as co-educators who are committed to supporting these future leaders!”

We welcomed our new group of Cristo Rey Richmond High School student interns last week with an orientation session and clinic tour! Two are returning for a second and third (!) year of serving at CrossOver and two are brand new to our clinics. We're thankful for their eager service and know they will learn a lot this year!

We're grateful for The MedRVA Foundation's partnership in offering vision care to our patients!

Meet Dr. Rapone: The MedRVA Foundation’s dedicated optometrist who also provides charitable care at CrossOver Healthcare Ministry.

During back-to-school season, Dr. Rapone sees many young patients getting ready for the year ahead. One unforgettable rising 6th grader recently came in for his annual eye exam.

With glasses since age 5, this confident patient knew the drill and took on the bright lights and eye drops like a champ. He even earned the coveted “Best Patient of the Day” award!

As he headed out with cool new sunglasses and an updated prescription, he stopped and asked:

“Can you ask me what I want to be when I grow up?”

Of course, Dr. Rapone asked, and his answer?

“I want to be an eye doctor!”

Here’s to healthy vision and the next generation of compassionate care providers!
