Mio is one of several Bonner Scholars at the University of Richmond who volunteer 10 hours a week at CrossOver. A senior biology major from Chicago, IL, Mio has been serving at CrossOver since her freshman year. She intends to pursue medical school in the future, and said has gained a lot of experience in her multiple roles at CrossOver, where she's served as a financial screener, front desk patient check-in, and now as a medical scribe.
"I've learned so much here--it's been a good opportunity to give to the community, but I've gained so much back in experience. CrossOver is a place for you to grow and learn--there are hard days and hard cases, but it's an opportunity to grow more emotionally aware and understand the things that people are struggling with that you can't see—to strengthen your empathy for others," Mio wisely said.
CrosssOver has partnered with the Bonner Scholars program for more than 20 years. Blake Stack, who serves as the Sr. Associate Director of Student Engagement at the
University of Richmond-Bonner Center for Civic Engagement reflected on the partnership: "It’s amazing to think about the fact that CrossOver has welcomed UR students into their work for over two decades! Whether they're preparing to work in public health or clinical settings, students walk away from their experience with CrossOver staff with a better understanding of what a just and equitable healthcare system could look like, and we’re tremendously grateful. Your care for the community extends to each and every student that walks through your doors, and it’s a privilege to work alongside you as co-educators who are committed to supporting these future leaders!”
