Dear Friends,
We live in a culture that glorifies busy-ness. One that moves fast, rewards productivity, and measures our worth by how much we get done.
But this constant pace often comes with a price. Most of us live in a heightened state of stress, often without realizing it.
Chronic stress is now recognized as one of the leading causes of disease and illness. Throughout the day, our bodies produce cortisol, the stress hormone, in a slow, steady drip that keeps our nervous system on high alert. Over time, this takes a toll on our hearts, our minds, and our overall well-being.
When I look back on my final year in the corporate world, I can see now how stressful it was. At that time, cardiovascular disease was the number one cause of natural death! A reminder that sometimes doing nothing is the best medicine.
When I was laid off in 2016, I never looked back. I craved peace. I craved the soothing balm of calm, quiet, and space to breathe. That moment became a turning point, a doorway into a slower, more intentional, more gentle way of living.
There is often resistance to slower-paced practices. Practices that promote stillness. Yet these are the advanced practices. Yin Yoga, Restorative Yoga, and Yoga Nidra are healing modalities which bring us back to a state of harmony and balance (or homeostasis). Studies now show that when we begin our day with these calming practices, we carry that felt sense of peace with us. We move through the day with greater ease. We are less reactive, more attentive, and more gentle toward ourselves and each other.
You can allow yourself time to rest.
You don’t have to get it all done today.
You can leave a sink full of dishes.
You can leave the basket of laundry unfolded.
You can let that last email wait until tomorrow.
You are allowed to pause.
You are allowed to rest.
And in doing so, you make space for healing. The kind that begins with stillness.
Embrace stillness and rest.
Join me for Restorative Yoga + Yoga Nidra on Sunday, October 26 — a practice designed to nourish your mind, body, and heart.
With warmth,
Alix
