Macronutrients are nutrients that your body needs in large amounts to function properly. They are the main source of energy and the building blocks for building and maintaining your body.
# # The 3 main macronutrients:
**🍞 Carbohydrates**
- They are the body's main source of quick energy
- They are found in: bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, fruits, vegetables
- They provide 4 calories per gram
- They are divided into simple (sugars) and complex (fiber)
**🥩 Proteins**
- They build and repair muscles, skin, bones, and other tissues
- They are found in: meat, chicken, fish, eggs, legumes, dairy
- They provide 4 calories per gram
- They also regulate important bodily functions
**🥑 Fats**
- They store long-term energy and protect organs
- They are found in: oils, butter, nuts, avocado, fatty fish
- They provide 9 calories per gram (twice as much as the others)
- They are needed to absorb vitamins and produce hormones
# # Why are they important?
Your body needs them every day to have energy, grow, recover from exercise, and maintain all vital functions. A balanced diet should include all three in the correct proportions.
