This Mother’s Day, meet Chris 💐

After a new diagnosis affecting her mobility added unexpected challenges to her life with cerebral palsy, Christine moved to Richmond to rebuild her independence at Sheltering Arms—so her family wouldn’t have to become caregivers too soon.

Her goals? Picking up her grandchildren, visiting the zoo, and even having the stamina to enjoy movie night!❤️

Watch her inspiring Mother’s Day message.

💬 Then share your favorite Mother’s Day message with us in the comments—we’d love to hear what this day means to you.

During Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month, the 2026 Sheltering Arms Walk, Run & Roll Race powered by PRK Aviation brings our community together to celebrate the resilience, determination, and achievements of individuals living with limb loss or limb difference. Every step, roll, or stride is a powerful show of support and inclusion. 💙

📅 Saturday, April 25, 2026
⏰ 1:00–4:00 PM
📍 Sheltering Arms Institute Inpatient Hospital

Thanks to generous corporate and community sponsors, this event remains free and accessible, ensuring every participant feels welcomed, supported, and celebrated.

Funds raised make a lasting impact by:
✅ Supporting Sheltering Arms’ monthly limb loss and limb difference support group, a vital space for education, encouragement, peer connection, and hope
✅ Helping send two individuals to the Amputee Coalition National Conference, connecting them to cutting‑edge education, adaptive resources, and a national community that empowers confidence, independence, and advocacy

Whether you participate or donate, you’re helping ensure that no one navigates limb loss alone—strengthening programs that build confidence, restore mobility, and improve quality of life long after the finish line.

In honor of Women’s History Month, we’re proud to share this interview with Sheltering Arms’ CEO, Dianne Jewell, reflecting on the legacy of our founder, Rebekah Peterkin. 🌟 Meet Robert A. Angle — Partner, Regulatory Litigation at Troutman Pepper Locke🌟

We are thrilled to welcome Robert Angle to the Sheltering Arms Foundation Board. Robert is an accomplished attorney who guides clients through complex regulatory disputes across a variety of industries. In addition to leading his firm’s Intellectual Property Practice, he represents clients in commercial litigation at both the trial and appellate levels.

A proud double ’Hoo, Robert holds a B.A. in History and a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law.

He has also demonstrated a deep commitment to the Richmond community through his board service with Venture Richmond, The Valentine and now Sheltering Arms Foundation.

Robert's connection to Arms Institute is especially meaningful. His wife, Eleanor, is a former patient and now a dedicated peer mentor volunteer. Her passion for art has also led her to serve actively on the Sheltering Arms Art Wall Committee.

Together, Robert and Eleanor have two adult daughters, Virginia and Ellie, and a yellow Labrador named Rigley—who keeps the whole family smiling.

We are grateful for the Angle family’s commitment and the positive impact they continue to make in our community. 💙

🌟 Celebrating Bill Mayo and the Power of Community Generosity! 🌟

We’re proud to share Bill’s story, after losing a limb, Bill’s determination, hard work, and perseverance have inspired everyone who has the privilege of knowing him. 💪💛.

When Bill—also a member of the Middlesex County Moose Lodge—learned that much of the advanced technology in our outpatient centers is made possible through philanthropy, he encouraged his Lodge to make a gift to Sheltering Arms Foundation.

His passion sparked a friendly challenge to the Richmond East Lodge, which also made a gift in Bill’s honor. These contributions will support our Margin of Excellence programs, helping fund advanced rehab technology, specialized clinician education, and innovative therapy programs.

🙌 Thank you, Bill, and thank you to both Moose Lodges for making a meaningful impact in our community!
