An evening of community and celebration โœจโค๏ธ
ECMHP Holiday Fair 2025

2nd year of transforming our Richmond Office into a winter wonderland of crafts and holiday magic. Families were able to come to this free event, enjoy dinner, various crafts, cookie decorating, hot chocolate, and Santaโ€™s Workshop. Families were able to choose gifts, get them wrapped, and decide how they wanted to use them.

Santaโ€™s workshop was made possible by the generous donations of Girl Scout Troops 33350 and 30803, toy drive, and many friends and family members of Jeff Sloan (executive director) and Sam Watson-Alvarado (associate director).

Our staff worked hard to plan, prep, decorate, and facilitate the evening alongside parent and Girl Scout volunteers of Girl Scout Troop 33350.

Community brings joy.
Community heals.
Community makes the world a better place.

Together, We Made an Impact!

This year, we witnessed the power of community in action. From the dedication of our staff and partners to the resilience of the children and families we serve, every story shared and every milestone reached reflects whatโ€™s possible when compassion meets commitment. Our impact this year is not just measured in numbers; itโ€™s seen in the lives changed, the trust built, and the hope restored.

Serving families in West Contra Costa County since 1974

The Early Childhood Mental Health Program (ECMHP) has been making a difference in the lives of young children and their families for over 45 years. Back in 1974, a group of parents of children with behavioral and psychological issues joined with teachers, social workers and community activists. Their goal was to provide the special care and guidance these challenged kids needed and deserved. Together, they formed a "Therapeutic Nursery School." The agency was incorporated as a non-profit in 1983.

In the early days, one of Early Childhoodโ€™s board members wrote a personal check each month to make the agencyโ€™s payroll, and was reimbursed later when the money came in. Thankfully, today, Early Childhood has stable funding from federal Medicaid (Medi-Cal in California), which are funneled through the state and eventually Contra Costa County. Despite this, the need always exceeds our agency's means.

Today, Early Childhood's team has grown to about 35 therapists serving 40 families each day, and over 500 a year, offering a broad range of services to troubled children in West Contra Costa County. The agency still runs the Comprehensive Therapeutic Nursery, offers parenting classes and support groups, family and child therapy, and provides state-of-the-art training to early childhood professionals.
