Ever worry if your website is fully accessible? Worry no more. We’ve created an easy guide and checklist.
ACCESSIBLE WEBSITES
SKIP/DESCRIPTIVE LINKS —
SKIP LINK: Please provide a "Skip to main content" link for screen reader and keyboard users. DESCRIPTIVE LINKS: Use link text that describes the destination ("Learn more about our services" instead of "Click here"). Please label the play button on videos "play."
DEAF & BLIND ACCESSIBLE —
Please provide alt text for images, icons, and non-text content. CAPTIONS & TRANSCRIPT: Include captions for videos and transcripts for audio content.
TEXT & FONTS — RESIZE TEXT: Text should be resizable up to 200% without losing functionality. FONTS: San Sarid fonts (like Arial, Helvetica, Verdana) are generally preferred for screen readability due to their clear letterforms and even stroke width.
COLOR — COLOR CONTRAST: Ensure sufficient contrast between text and background. Avoid relying solely on color: Use more than just color to convey information (e.g., add text labels).
VISUALS — FLASHING: Content should not flash more than 3 times per second. VISIBLE FOCUS: Interactive elements must have a visible focus indicator (a border or glow). AVOID IMAGE CAROUSELS & SLIDERS: They can be challenging for screen readers to navigate.
NAVIGATION — KEYBOARD NAVIGATION: Ensure all functionality is keyboard-accessible. Maintain consistent layout and navigation. LABELS: Properly label form fields, include error messages, and use a logical tab order. Use structured headings (H1, H2, H3) for content. INSTRUCTIONS: Provide clear guidance for forms and interactions. ERROR HANDLING: Offer helpful error messages with correction suggestions.
ACCESSIBILITY — LANGUAGE: Please use plain language; avoid jargon where possible. Set the correct language in your HTML (). RESPONSIVE DESIGN: Ensure accessibility across devices and screen sizes. Test your site with screen readers like NVDA, JAWS, or VoiceOver. ARIA ROLES: Use ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) roles and attributes correctly and sparingly.
