His research was recently recognized by the International Spine Intervention Society as the “Best Clinical Paper” at their 17th Annual Scientific Meeting in Toronto, CA. He is also the Principal Investigator on a trial evaluating painful lumbar discs, and a separate study of medication injected into painfully arthritic joints of the back to help reverse the arthritic changes. These are just a few examples of how Dr. DePalma contributes to advances and innovation in diagnosing and treating painful spinal disorders. Conditions Treated

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat painful compression fractures in the spine, often related to osteoporosis. During the procedure, a small balloon is gently placed into the fractured bone to help restore height, and the space is then stabilized with bone cement.

For many patients, this can help reduce pain, improve mobility, and support a faster recovery. If you have been diagnosed with an osteoporotic fracture, it may be worth discussing whether kyphoplasty is an appropriate option for you. Call today and schedule your appointment.

Did you know? The spine is a highly complex structure supported by more than 120 muscles, 220 ligaments, and 100 joints. This intricate system allows the spine to provide stability, flexibility, and movement while also protecting the spinal cord and supporting the body’s weight.

Because so many structures work together, spine pain does not always come from one single source. An accurate evaluation is important to determine whether symptoms are related to the muscles, ligaments, joints, discs, or nerves.

Heat and ice can both be useful in the management of back pain, but they are not always appropriate for the same situations.

Heat may help relax tight muscles and improve local blood flow, while cold therapy is often used for acute inflammation, recent strain, or pain flare-ups.

The choice between heat and ice depends on the underlying cause, the timing of symptoms, and the individual patient’s condition.

If back pain is persistent or recurring, a medical evaluation can help determine the most appropriate treatment approach.

Piriformis syndrome and sciatica can cause similar symptoms, including buttock pain and pain that travels down the leg. One key difference is where the pain starts: piriformis syndrome typically begins deep in the buttock, while sciatica often starts in the lower back and radiates downward. Pain that worsens with sitting or hip movement may suggest piriformis involvement, while pain that worsens with bending, coughing, or sneezing may point more toward a spinal cause.

Because these conditions can overlap, an accurate clinical evaluation is important to determine the source of symptoms and guide treatment.

Acupuncture is often well tolerated when performed correctly. Most patients describe the sensation as a brief pinch or mild poke as the needle is inserted, rather than significant pain.

These needles are much finer than those used for injections or blood draws, and the depth of insertion varies depending on the treatment point and clinical purpose. In many cases, only a small portion of the needle is placed beneath the skin.

From pain to zero — and back to doing what she loves.

“I couldn’t even go for a walk anymore… and that really bothered me.”

After a precise diagnosis, we used an X-ray guided steroid injection to target the exact nerve causing her pain. The result?

“My pain level is 0… which is incredible.”

This is what happens when treatment is both accurate and intentional — not just managing symptoms, but addressing the source.

If pain is limiting your daily life, there may be a solution that gets you back to it.
