Measles exposure in Lexington

Health officials have identified potential measles case exposure in Fayette County, Kentucky. An unvaccinated, out-of-state traveler stayed at the Hyatt Place in Hamburg from December 31, 2025 - January 2, 2026.

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus that can cause serious health complications, especially in young children. Vaccination is the best protection against measles.

If you have concerns about exposure to measles, contact your health care provider.

2nd edit: this information was posted to make my patients aware of a measles case in KY and multiple cases elsewhere. The TLDR on need for boosters is if traveling via airplane this spring consider an early MMR vax if your infant is 6-11m old, an early booster if under 4, a booster for yourself if you’re unable to determine if you had measles as a child or if you got 2 boosters.

Edited: I’m an MD/PhD with a degree in molecular virology and I trained at one of the top medical schools in the country and worked with one of the grad students who invented the Salk polio vaccine. I’m not entertaining anti-vaxxer debate on this post. Y’all go elsewhere.

Unfortunately the measles outbreak has hit Kentucky. Measles is the most contagious virus in human history. A person with an active infection on average can spread it to 15-18 people. Infectious virus will stay in the air for hours, so even if the measles infected person left a room 3 hours ago you can still catch it. An infected man in Texas is estimated to have exposed tens of thousands of people in one afternoon of visiting tourist attractions. However the MMR vaccination 2 shot series is very effective and most of the cases in Texas and New Mexico are in unvaccinated people.

If you have an infant < 6 months old, avoid public spaces for awhile. 1 in 5 people infected will be hospitalized. Infants between 6-11 months can get vaccinated early but then will still need the full 2 shot series at 12 months and 4-6 years. If you have a child 4 or older that has 1 shot but hasn’t gotten their second yet, go ahead and get the second shot in the series.

Immunocompromised people and their loved ones who want to protect them should be cautious in public spaces unfortunately- the N95 mask is still your best friend here.
