Steelers star T.J. Watt suffered from a partially collapsed lung after receiving a dry needling session which has sparked some confusion as to the difference between acupuncture and dry needling. They are not the same thing even though both use needles. The main difference being that acupuncturists are required to get a bachelors degree, go through lengthy graduate level training (over 1,700 hours in VA), and are regulated nationally by the NCCAOM and through the board of medicine in their respective states. In turn, there is currently no nationally recognized board that oversees dry needling certification and no standards on how extensive the training is. In some cases can be as little as a couple of hours.

Here are some quotes sourced from a recent article in ESPN by other teammates concerning the treatment:

“It’s a more invasive form of needling,” Harrison said then. “It can be recovery-based and help to heal any injuries that are nagging. ... It’s painful as hell.”

Steelers inside linebacker Patrick Queen said Friday that he prefers to use acupuncture over dry needling.

“Kind of two different things,” Queen said. “... I don’t do the whole dry needle thing. I’m actually scared of dry needling, so I kind of stay away from that stuff.
