As we are closing the month of May and National-Speech-Language-Hearing Month, it is time to introduce our amazing speech duo.

Nikki Stephenson, M.S., CCC-SLP, LSVTL, has been with Shirkey Premier Therapy for three years. She has a Bachelors Degree in Communication Disorders and a Masters of Science in Speech-Language Pathology from The University of Central Missouri. Nikki is certified in two additional specialty programs that include LSVT LOUD and VitalStim.

Nikki enjoys spending time with her one year old daughter Riley, and husband Collin.

Daschia Carpenter, M.S., CCC-SLP, LSVTL, has been with Shirkey Premier Therapy for eight years and has a Masters of Science in Speech Language Pathology. Daschia is certified in three additional programs that include VitalStim, DINES, and LSVT LOUD.

Daschia enjoys spending time with her daughter Rayna, son Xander, and husband Scott.

Cognitive and language skills are also key areas our SLP team treat on a daily basis, both inpatient and outpatient.

Through specialized testing we are able to determine the patient’s level of impairment.

Memory, planning and completing a task, social skills, language, and attention are all areas our therapists are able to assist with.

Another beneficial program our SLP team is proud to offer is VitalStim therapy. VitalStim is a non-invasive rehabilitation treatment that stimulates muscles responsible to swallowing.

Who is a good candidate for this type of therapy? If you have any of the symptoms below, VitalStim could be beneficial in reducing them.

-Feeling of food stuck in the throat.
-Abnormal intentional cough.
-Recurring infections in chest.
-Multiple swallows to clear throat.
-Decreased vocal quality.
-Frequent coughing or clearing throat after swallow.
