Virginia Health Care Foundation

Virginia Health Care Foundation VHCF is increasing access to primary health care for uninsured & medically underserved Virginians. Boost!

The Virginia Health Care Foundation (VHCF) is a non-profit, public/private partnership initiated by the General Assembly and its Joint Commission on Health Care 33 years ago as an integral part of the Commonwealth’s approach to ensuring that all Virginians have access to the health care they need. As the only statewide health foundation in the Commonwealth, VHCF is committed to meeting the diverse

needs of communities and populations throughout Virginia. VHCF programs and initiatives focus on providing medical, behavioral health (BH), dental services and prescription medicines to low-income, uninsured and medically underserved Virginians. VHCF support helps free clinics, community health centers, and a variety of local human and social services organizations expand both the types of care offered and the number of patients/clients cared for each year. To date, VHCF’s partnerships and programs have touched the lives of more than 900,000 uninsured and medically underserved Virginians. Its programs include grants to increase access to basic behavioral health services, dental care and medical treatments; funding for Medication Assistance Caseworkers, who obtain free prescription medicines for income eligible patients from the pharmaceutical companies Patient Assistance Program; and grants for Outreach Workers to help low-income individuals and families apply for and remain enrolled in Virginia’s Medicaid and FAMIS health insurance programs. VHCF is also addressing Virginia’s mental health crisis with programs to increase the number of licensed therapists via its Boost! program and psychiatric nurse practitioners via its Psych NP Scholarship program. removes the financial barriers to licensure by paying for required supervision hours for those who have earned a master’s degree in social work or counseling. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (Psych NP) Scholarship Program pays full tuition and all required fees.

Newly Released: Profile of Virginia’s Uninsured

Virginia’s uninsured rate increased slightly in 2024, rising from a historic low of 7.6% in 2023 to 8.1% in 2024, according to our latest Profile of Virginia’s Uninsured, developed by our partners at the Urban Institute.

The increase mirrors national trends following the end of the COVID-era Medicaid continuous coverage requirement and the return to regular Medicaid renewals (known as "unwinding").

This year's Profile of Virginia's Uninsured provides an important baseline snapshot of health coverage in Virginia before major federal policy changes take full effect. Explore the full Profile summary and detailed analysis by year, region, age, income, race/ethnicity, and more on our website: https://www.vhcf.org/data/profile-of-virginias-uninsured/

A Tree Planted Counseling (ATPC) takes pride in providing professional and compassionate support to its clients while providing behavioral health services that align with community needs. ATPC recognized the need for perinatal mental health services in Roanoke and the surrounding areas, but as an It Takes a Village grantee, it was able to hire a new counselor, Robin Witt, LPC to support perinatal clients locally and across the Commonwealth.

ATP has appointments available virtually statewide or in-person in Roanoke.
ATP accepts Medicaid, commercial health insurance plans, and offers sliding fee options for uninsured clients. To schedule a telehealth or in-person appointment, call 540-701-3704. To learn more about Robin: https://www.atreeplanted.org/robinwitt

🎉 Big news! VHCF’s Boost! program just hit a major milestone: 200 therapists have achieved licensure.

We’re proud to celebrate these professionals and their impact across the Commonwealth. Collectively, these therapists provide over 200,000 patient visits annually. During Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re celebrating our commitment to strengthening Virginia’s behavioral health workforce, so everyone has access to the care they need.

Boost! pays for the licensure-required Supervision of motivated Residents in Counseling or Marriage and Family Therapy and Supervisees in Social Work. Boost! is a special initiative of the Virginia Health Care Foundation, funded by the Virginia General Assembly and the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, and private donors. May 6 is Maternal Mental Health Awareness Day.

1 in 8 pregnant or postpartum Virginians experience maternal mental health conditions. While treatment is available and recovery is possible, untreated maternal mental health conditions can lead to poor outcomes, including maternal mortality.

If you or someone you know is pregnant or a new parent, support is available. Resources include virtual and in person therapy services offered by It Takes a Village grantees across Virginia: https://www.vhcf.org/ittakesavillage/

Additional maternal mental health resources compiled by the Virginia Department of Health can be found here: https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/maternal-health/pregnancy-and-postpartum-resources/maternal-mental-health/

We are grateful to Dr. Dana Stallings and all our dedicated Psych NP Scholars for continuing their education to better serve patients and expand access to mental health care.

Learn how you can also become a VHCF Psych NP Scholar: https://www.vhcf.org/for-those-who-help/resources-for-providers/psych-mental-health-np-scholarship/

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and we want to recognize NPs like Dr. Dana Stallings who pursued a Psychiatric Mental Health NP certification thanks to a scholarship from the Virginia Health Care Foundation.

“After 15+ years in diabetes care, I kept hitting the same wall with my patients - uncontrolled diabetes despite advanced technology. When I looked deeper, I found the real issue wasn’t ‘noncompliance’ but undiagnosed and undertreated mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. Once I began addressing mental health, outcomes improved, but I quickly outgrew my FNP scope. Pursuing my PMHNP certification through VHCF changed everything. Now, in a rural health care desert, I’m able to provide truly integrated diabetes and mental health care, both in-person and virtually. Because mental health isn’t separate from physical health – it’s foundational to it.”

Learn more about VHCF’s PMHNP scholarships at https://bit.ly/47IA6H3. The next deadline is July 1.

For 10 years, VHCF and Global Links have partnered to provide nebulizers to those in need, regardless of insurance status.

As summer approaches, so does heat, poor air quality and increased allergens, causing flare-ups and complications for people living with asthma, COPD, and other respiratory conditions.

Global Links’ Breathe Hope program secures gently used nebulizers to provide patients living with chronic breathing conditions with the resources they need to manage their treatments and symptoms, avoiding costly emergency rooms visits and improving quality of life.

Licensed providers interested in accessing services through the Breathe Hope program can visit: https://globallinks.org/our-programs/domestic-medical-aid/breathe-hope/

VHCF’s The Pharmacy Connection (TPC) software offers users access to Breathe Hope’s nebulizers.

Not a TPC user but interested in learning more? Visit: https://www.vhcf.org/for-those-who-help/the-pharmacy-connection/
