We had some very special visitors at our Compassionate Care Center today!

Ruth Rogers Hawkins, a founder and early supporter of Hospice Care Plus, stopped by with her granddaughter Gracie to donate a generous supply of snacks for our families and patients. Their visits are always a treat (in more ways than one!), and we’re so grateful for their continued kindness.

Today’s visit came with a sweet reunion too: Ruth ran into longtime HCP volunteer and former Richmond Mayor Connie Lawson. Connie was also instrumental in helping Hospice Care Plus get its start. The two spent a few minutes reminiscing and sharing stories from the early days, and we were lucky to witness it.

We’re deeply thankful for those who helped build HCP from the ground up, and for the next generation, like Gracie, who are already carrying the legacy forward.

Thank you for your dedication, support and friendship!

We’re back with another Myth Busting Monday!

One of the myths we hear often is that you need to have a lot of free time to be a hospice volunteer. But the truth is, you don’t.

Even if you only have an hour or two a week (or even a month) you can make a real difference in the lives of hospice patients and their families. Volunteers help in ways that fit their own schedule. They sit and talk with patients, provide companionship to caregivers, assist at the front desk of our Compassionate Care Center, bake and craft, make phone calls, do lawn care, and so much more.

Our volunteers come from all chapters of life: from high school and college students, to full-time working adults, and retirees. No matter their schedule, we help them find meaningful ways to give back and connect with others.

If you’re wondering about training, we’ve got options. We offer a few in-person, daylong trainings each year, and we also have a self-paced online version if that's more suitable.

We’re back with another Myth Busting Monday!

A common myth is that choosing hospice means you have to give up all treatment. Your care team will work closely with you to create a plan that fits your needs, keeps you comfortable, and enhances your quality of life.

At Hospice Care Plus, we provide compassionate care and develop a personalized treatment plan that supports both the patient and their family every step of the way.

Grief is a journey, and you don’t have to walk it alone.

Journaling Through Grief is a small, supportive group where you can explore your experience of loss through writing and shared conversation. It’s led by professional staff and uses Dr. Alan Wolfelt’s Understanding Your Grief as a guide.

We’ll meet on Thursday mornings, starting August 7 and running through October 23, from 10 to noon. The group will meet at the Estill County Public Library in Irvine. It’s open to anyone in the community, and space is limited to just 12 people so we can keep it personal.

To sign up or learn more, visit https://hospicecareplus.org/services/grief-and-loss-support/ or call Denise McKinney at 859-986-1500.

We were thrilled to welcome back the students from PASSPORT Camp! Over the weekend, they volunteered at the Compassionate Care Center, lending a hand with several groundskeeping projects. For the past four summers, we’ve been grateful for this ongoing partnership and always appreciate their energy, compassion, and commitment to supporting Hospice Care Plus.

PASSPORT’s mission connects students with local organizations to meet ongoing community needs in partnership with local ministries. By working closely with community leaders, PASSPORT ensures that every mission project provides sustainable, lasting value to those they serve.

If you have a group who is interested in volunteering at Hospice Care Plus, please visit www.hospicecareplus.org or give us a call at 859-986-1500.

Hopeful, Expert, Compassionate Care

We take pride in hopeful, compassionate, expert care that recognizes that life continues even when there is no cure. We work with you, your caregiver, your family, and your doctors to control symptoms at home so you can focus on what matters: what you want life to look like for the next several months. What do you want to do and experience? Where do you want to be? What are you fighting for, working towards, planning for, and how can we help you get there?

Whether you’re part of our hospice or palliative programs, and regardless of whether your care is in your home or at our Compassionate Care Center, our goal is simple: to help you achieve the highest quality of life and to support your caregiver and family. We emphasize dignity, hope, and compassion as we provide specialized medical and team care to manage pain, symptoms, and other challenges.

We work alongside patients and families to make every moment matter. Read more about us at www.hospicecareplus.org, or savor inspiring stories of our patients, families, and staff as they pursue bucket-list wishes together--truly making every moment matter-- at www.hcpblogs.com. Then, contact us: learn about our programs, become a volunteer, apply for employment, give your financial support, or interact with us on Facebook.

We are a non-profit hospice serving Madison, Estill, Jackson, Lee, Owsley and Rockcastle counties. We offer both hospice and palliative care as well as a bereavement program. We also own and operate the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, a short-term inpatient hospice facility for symptom management and respite care.
