Students for Disability Advocacy and Awareness at VCU

Students for Disability Advocacy and Awareness at VCU SDAA is a coalition of students with disabilities and allies working to improve accessibility and awa

In the fall of 2011, Jenson Larrimore and Matt Shapiro met on the VCU campus. One in a manual wheelchair, the other in an electric powerchair. Within 5 minutes, they found they shared many struggles, especially the physical barriers of the VCU campus. They decided to start a student organization to address these problems and... the SDAA was born! This year will mark the second year that the SDAA has sponsored Disability Awareness Week at VCU. The purpose of this week long celebration is to openly confront the social stigma that surrounds people with disabilities. We encourage people to embrace their abilities and learn to incorporate them in to a positive self-image. Also, we try to educate the community on living with disabilities and how people can change how the world views us...even if it is one person at a time. Accessibility, Inclusion, Diversity, ADA, and innovation are all major themes to our group. Join us and help us build a larger understanding that serves to bring us together as a conscientious community!
