Do proportions matter in Ashtanga yoga?

Inspired by the recent story post by here Robbie and Brad standing back-to-back with Brad having a slight height advantage. However when sitting down, Robbie seemingly gains the advantage!

Now think of how this might impact our practice whether we’re lifting up & jumping back, binding, or putting our leg behind our head? As teachers of ashtanga yoga, do we have an obligation to recognize these subtle differences when working with our students?

Pls comment with your thoughts.

Congratulations to Shelley for completing Intermediate Series, which ends with 7 different headstand variations. In September Shelley arrived in Richmond from New Zealand for a 2 year work stint, already with a daily practice of 16 years. She seamlessly wove herself into the fabric of RCY and we are all improved by her kind, humorous, and steady presence. Thank you, Shelley!

We are conveniently located in the historic Jackson Ward neighborhood of Richmond at 212 E. Clay street. Look for the green illuminated “YOGA” sign. It’s there to remind us that yoga is a gift that always keeps giving 💚🙏🏼
Thank you to Chuck Taylor for this night shot of the studio!

We got two great google reviews last week. It feels good when folks are happy about their experience and want to share it.

Charlie’s getting his MA in Social Work, working in the hospital and going to school full time. He’s got a very full schedule and cherishes the energy and stress-relief that practice provides. Charlie’s not on social media.

Victoria Wolfgang .of.a.yogi is traveling the world while writing, coaching, and teaching yoga. She practiced with us for a week while visiting her parents. Victoria has an intriguing story and background, and a beautiful dedicated yoga practice. Check out her website!

I hope to know Victoria and Charlie for a long time. I’m super impressed with the passion and talent they both have for the work they’ve chosen, and I look forward to seeing them do great things!

I play with some planks and strength-retaining exercises at the end of my very basic practice, in an effort to delay, and happily observe the nuances of, the inevitable decline. Today my student-turned-teacher, Brad , said, you might as well try Vasishthasana! So I gave it my first try. It’ll be fun to see if it gets better before it gets worse!

It’s a pretty simple pose. I remember Tim Miller saying that some 3rd series Ashtanga poses are pretty basic vinyasa poses— but I can say it’s not as easy at a certain age :-)

So I will take a quick break from tradition and invite our students/practitioners to try this “basic” posture… the 1st posture of 3rd Series (the whole of which is incredibly demanding!)
