ARTIST STATEMENT

My body of work originates in visual thinking. The unseen in the mind’s eye allows for the organization of thoughts. To realize this, I choreograph a range of topological forms within stylized infographic environments to explore the visual communication of information.

I derive imagery from topology which is a branch of mathematics where fundamental forms are bent, folded, and stretched to study their qualitative features. These features reflect aspects of physical space, dimension, and transformation. The infographics, such as elements from graphs, charts, and plots, reflect aspects of data, examination, and discovery.

On January 31st, the new Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU Tower NICU opened! It was an absolute honor to select and install 59+ original pieces of fine art, creating a comforting environment for our tiniest patients, their family members, providers, and visitors. We know that the thoughtfulness put into the selection and placement of each piece will help those at CHoR feel more cared for, both physically and mentally. “As cultural traditions take root in diaspora communities, new connections between generations and cultures are both necessary and revitalizing. Right after the pandemic, acclaimed young dancer Yamini Kalluri, a master of the Kuchipudi dance of her Telugu forbearers, began a collaboration with some of the finest Carnatic musicians in the country, adding a new depth to her captivating movements. Their appearance at the Richmond Folk Festival braids together these two strands of South Indian tradition into a spellbinding presentation of their shared heritage.” Richmond Folk Festival VCU HealthRVA Magazine VCUarts Theatre VCUarts National Organization for Arts in Health

recognizes and honors Hispanic Heritage Month through the exhibition of works by Richard Harding ! Take a stroll through the Gateway Gallery to enjoy these intricate and exciting pieces, showcasing rich history and cultural significance.

On Exhibit | 9/9 - 11/6/2025

Richard Harding is an Ashland-based artist who specializes in the intricate techniques found in basketry. Through the use of chording sewn in concentric circles, he creates stunning and unique pieces that emulate the beauty of organic forms. Inspired by cultural parallels between basketry and pottery, Harding’s work explores the intricate relationship between traditional crafts and contemporary art. Using Thread, Twine, Rope, and other materials, he produces soft sculptures that challenge the traditional boundaries of fiber art.

With a deep appreciation for the meticulous process of weaving, Harding’s work not only showcases his technical proficiency but also invites viewers to contemplate the rich history and cultural significance of basketry.

“Each morning, I begin in stillness—reading, journaling, and meditating. This quiet time grounds me and often inspires the thoughts, feelings, and intentions that I carry into my creative process. I see art everywhere. Observing nature—its shapes, textures, and colors—sparks a desire in me to create, to explore, and to express.
Whether working with canvas or photography, I am drawn to the play of color—bright and bold. I build depth and energy through layers of paint, gestural movement, and intuitive mark making, allowing each piece to evolve organically. My work is a reflection of the joy I find in the process and the light I hope to share with others.
Through my art, I invite you into a shared journey—one of curiosity, emotion, and connection. My hope is that each piece brings positive energy and a sense of warmth and light into your space.
Art, for me, is an exploration of color, texture, and emotion. My journey began with a foundation in Art and Psychology, leading to a lifelong appreciation of how creativity connects us to ourselves and others. After years in the medical device industry, my move to Lake Anna in 2020 reignited my passion for painting. I am drawn to the tactile experience of “pushing” paint, layering colors, and discovering unexpected depth through acrylics, mixed media, and oil painting. The interplay of texture and movement in my work mirrors the organic flow of nature and emotion, creating pieces that invite personal interpretation. Above all, I am honored when my art resonates with others—when someone feels a connection strong enough to welcome it into their space. Each painting is a conversation, an expression of joy, contemplation, and discovery.“

On exhibit April 2 – August 1, 2025

Artist Carson Overstreet grew up in the small town of Bedford, Virginia in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Inspired by the southern landscape and molded by her own artistic family upbringing, Carson—who was always artistically inclined—took up painting in 2013. For her first ten years of painting, she worked as a self-taught artist. Since 2023, she has enrolled in courses with Scott Christensen and the late Randy Sexton and read every art book that she can. She dabbles in a little bit of everything with subjects including landscapes, florals, still life, figures and plein air, though large-scale landscapes and florals continue to be her most sought-after pieces. Her work defies categorization ranging from large to small, muted to saturated with color, realistic to abstract.

Carson’s work is available to see in person at LinDor Arts (Roanoke, Virginia), The District Gallery (Knoxville, Tennessee), and Camellia Art (Hilton Head Island and Bluffton), South Carolina). Her work is available for purchase online at .pruitt Pruitt and through Carson’s own website.

Carson is a member of the American Impressionist Society and teaches classes locally in Richmond, Virginia at Make Creative Studio.
