Over the past two weeks, our nurse practitioner, Kate Gibson, testified before the Virginia House of Delegates and the Virginia Senate in support of HB360.

As a clinician who treats kratom withdrawal (including 7-OH) at The Coleman Institute for Addiction Medicine, Kate shared firsthand insight into what we are seeing in practice. This includes opioid-like withdrawal symptoms requiring medical support.

➡️ HB360 does not ban kratom. Instead, it strengthens consumer protections in Virginia by:
1️⃣ Setting the purchase age at 21, similar to alcohol
2️⃣ Requiring clear labeling and ingredient transparency
3️⃣ Not allowing marketing or advertising that targets minors
4️⃣ Limiting high-potency derivatives like 7-OH
5️⃣ Prohibiting synthetic kratom-like compounds
6️⃣ Requiring products to be secured behind the counter

We’re so incredibly proud of Kate for lending her clinical expertise to policy discussions that prioritize our community’s safety and responsible regulation. 🩵

Our newest blog takes a closer look at MGM-15, a highly concentrated semi-synthetic 7-OH extract that’s raising concerns due to its potency and linked withdrawal symptoms. As kratom-related products become more popular, many people are finding themselves dependent without fully understanding what they’re even taking. The phrase ‘I didn’t know it was addictive’ is one that we hear daily.

At The Coleman Institute, we provide abstinence-based, outpatient detox for kratom products like MGM-15, using non-addictive comfort medications and medical supervision to help patients withdraw safely, without transitioning to replacement opioids like Suboxone or methadone.

If you or someone you love is struggling with MGM-15 or another kratom-derived product, this blog breaks down exactly what you need to know. 🩵

The Coleman Institute was featured today in a WTVR CBS 6 News story examining the growing concerns around kratom products in Virginia.

This article shares Cameron's experience with kratom addiction and how his family ultimately found The Coleman Institute in Richmond, VA, while seeking help. In the segment, our Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Kate Gibson, provided a clinical perspective on what we're seeing, including an increase in individuals struggling with withdrawal related to kratom and concentrated derivatives like 7-OH.

🩵 We appreciate Cameron and his family for speaking openly and helping bring attention to an issue many people are still learning about.

🍃 Kratom is no longer flying under the radar in the military.

The Department of Defense has made it clear that kratom use is prohibited for service members, despite being publicly available and marketed as a legal supplement. While kratom may not appear on every routine drug test panel, specialized testing can detect it, and enforcement falls under the UCMJ. Our latest blog explains whether the military can test for kratom, which kratom products the military has banned, and why treatment is vital to those serving.

🌿 Nano kratom is rising in popularity, and it's a lot stronger than your average kratom product.

Because it's processed with nanotechnology, it is absorbed by your body faster and can create a stronger high, which means withdrawal can feel even harder to manage without support.

Our newest blog article breaks down:
1️⃣ What nano kratom actually is
2️⃣ How increased absorption boosts potency
3️⃣ Why withdrawal symptoms can be more intense
4️⃣ How our Accelerated Outpatient Detox helps people safely stop kratom use with non-addictive comfort medications

➡️ If you, a loved one, or someone in your care is struggling with substances like nano kratom, this is worth the read.
