It's PTSD Awareness Day
You are not alone. Just look at the numbers.
Nationally, about 6% of the U.S. population will experience PTSD at some point in their lives, and approximately 3.6% of adults are affected in any given year (VA.gov | Veterans Affairs) (The Small Business Blog). If we apply these percentages to Mississippi's adult population, which is approximately 2.3 million according to the latest census data, we can estimate that around 82,800 people in Mississippi may experience PTSD during their lifetime, and about 82,800 individuals may be dealing with PTSD in any given year.
These numbers offer a rough estimate, and actual figures can vary based on local factors, including the prevalence of trauma, access to mental health services, and specific community dynamics.
Who is at a High Risk for PTSD?
Military Personnel and Veterans: High exposure to combat and other traumatic events in military service increases the risk significantly (The Small Business Blog).
Victims of Physical or Sexual Assault: Experiencing physical or sexual assault, particularly r**e, is a strong predictor of PTSD (The Small Business Blog) (VA.gov | Veterans Affairs).
First Responders: Police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and others regularly exposed to traumatic events are at heightened risk.
