Ayme & I spoke in our church service this past Sunday, and we wanted to share some notes from our lesson on dealing with Hurt / Brokenness / Wounds. These tools and resources have helped many of our clients and people who approach us at churches:
Key notes:
Hurt / Brokenness / Wounds will happen for everyone at some point. We all have Gethsemanes in our lives
How we handle those hurts is vitally important. God allows these things in our lives and He trusts us with it. If we allow it, hurt and wounds can develop and grow us to be better and stronger than we once were
There is a difference in responding and reacting. Reaction involves emotions and can cause further hurt. Responding is using spiritual wisdom. Choose to respond.
Peace is a practice and a choice in all situations and issues
Set boundaries when you have to and have healthy conversations if you will be received
When responding, often times the 24-hour rule is beneficial to address things when emotions are not so high
Timing is very important for decision making, taking action, and communication
Words can cause irreparable harm and you cannot take them back
Not everyone or everything needs a response from us
Remember to remain Open Minded / Open Handed / Open Hearted
Uncovering, discovering, and discarding issues is a valuable tool
Hurt and wounds that are not dealt with will always resurface somewhere down the road, and you can cause unintentional damage to others (even in your own home)
Church hurt is one of the worst things you can experience. Remember to align with God’s word when responding and decision making.
Everything is contextual and the severity of the hurt should be strongly considered
A person who truly is fasting, praying, and trying to find the will of God will be led by the Master
Keep your focus on the Creator and not the crisis
The scariest place is to not be on the Potter’s wheel. He has a purpose for the pain, and if you persevere, God’s promises will unfold before you
Stay strong and persevere,
