❓ What made you choose speech therapy as your career path?
From a young age, I was fascinated by voice acting—specifically the voices I heard when watching Saturday morning cartoons, but it wasn’t something I wanted to pursue as a career. It wasn’t until I met my mother-in-law, who is an SLP, and learned that part of the field includes an understanding of the mechanics behind voice and speech. My interest sparked.

As I became more immersed in the field, I discovered I truly enjoyed all aspects of it, not just the voicing, but also, hearing, cognition, swallowing and how all of those systems are connected to the rest of the body.

🙏 Do you have any mentors or people you’d like to thank for your career experience
My mother-in-law, Vicki Merritt, for introducing me to the field and continuing to be a valuable resource, especially given her experience as a Director of Rehab. Dr. Carolyn Higdon and the late Dr. Lennette Ivy and for their passion and high expectations for their students. Whitney Stafford Holmes for helping guide me through my Clinical Fellowship Year. On a personal note, Anna Sullivan Way, who went out of her way to find a cognition screener for me during my own inpatient recovery after a motor vehicle accident.

✅ Do you have any special certifications or areas of focus in your work?
I became Vital-Stim certified in 2021, which is a therapy that uses electrical stimulation to strengthen throat muscles and treat dysphagia. I plan to pursue certification in FEES (Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing), a portable swallow study using a small endoscopic camera.

🗣 What’s something you find yourself saying often to your patients?
“That’s a big bite!” and I frequently ask, “How’s today been?” instead of “How are you doing?”—especially with geriatric patients. It encourages more open, positive conversation and helps build rapport beyond just their medical condition.

🙃 What do you think is often misunderstood about speech therapy?
Many people associate speech therapy only with the school setting and assume it’s just about speaking clearly. In the medical setting, therapy often focuses on much more—cognition, feeding issues, swallowing disorders, etc. I spend a lot of time helping patients understand how these services directly benefit their quality of life.

💙 What do you appreciate about working for Mid South Rehab Services?
I will always appreciate the support the company showed my family and I during and after my motor vehicle accident. I also respect their commitment to being a Christian-based organization and their willingness to remain steadfast in that identity.

👨‍👩‍👦‍👦 What would you like to share about your personal life?

Today, we honor those heroes who willingly gave their lives so that we could live in freedom, worship freely, raise our families, pursue our dreams, and enjoy the countless blessings that at times we take for granted. Their sacrifice reminds us that freedom is never free. As John 15:13 tells us, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends." To all the families who have lost loved ones in service to our country, we honor you, we pray for you, and we thank you. May we never forget the courage, sacrifice, and selflessness of those who gave everything for this nation.

Meet Roberta Edwards, SLP at Jackson VA. Happy , Roberta!

🎓 Where did you receive your education?

I graduated high school from Cleveland High School. I received my undergraduate degree at Delta State University and my master's degree at Jackson State University.

❓What made you choose speech therapy as your career path?

My mom is an Occupational Therapist, so I knew I wanted to help people the way she did. Seeing how rewarding her work was and hearing her success stories left a lasting impression on me. My best friend was in the Speech Pathology program at DSU, and I loved hearing about the speech side of therapy. I was just so amazed by how many areas speech therapy encompassed, and I knew it was a career path I would genuinely love and feel passionate about. I have been a speech therapist for 26 years, and my love for this profession grows deeper every day.

🙏 Do you have any mentors or people you’d like to thank for your career experience?

Dr. Bagli was my instructor at JSU, and she was the toughest teacher I ever had—in the best way. She constantly pushed me to be more and do more, and she saw potential in me that I hadn’t yet seen in myself. Because of her, I grew not only as a student, but as a professional.
Mary Elizabeth was my clinical instructor during my final graduate school rotation, which took place in a hospital setting. The caseload was nearly 90% swallowing, and I was absolutely terrified. Mary Elizabeth took me under her wing and guided me through every step of that rotation. I learned so much from her, and she is the reason I developed such a strong passion for swallowing therapy.

✅ Do you have any special certifications or areas of focus in your work?

I am certified in DPNS, facial e-stim, myofascial release, Vital stim and Ampcare ESP. My true passion in therapy is working with geriatric population, with a focus on swallowing therapy.

🗣 What’s something you find yourself saying often to your patients?

“If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it.” I say this often to my cognitive patients—especially when they ask, “And why are we doing this again?” It’s a simple way to remind them that keeping the mind active is just as important as exercising the body.

🙃 What do you think is often misunderstood about speech therapy?

Speech therapy isn’t just about teaching someone how to talk. Many people assume speech therapists only work with children on speech sounds, but our scope is so much broader. We also address swallowing, voice, cognition, hearing, and more. I often hear, “I don’t need a speech therapist—my speech is fine,” which gives me the opportunity to explain that speech therapy isn’t only about speech.

🩵 What do you appreciate about working for Mid South Rehab Services?

I love that Mid South is a Christian-based company that truly prioritizes patient-centered care. Working for an organization that puts God first means more to me than I can express. At Mid South, I know I matter—I am not just another therapist or a number. They genuinely value their employees, support career advancement, and provide guidance every step of the way.
I cannot begin to express how much I appreciate Mid South. I have never worked for a company that consistently goes above and beyond for all of its staff, not just a select few.
In May of 2023, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Throughout my journey, Mid South surrounded me with prayer, encouragement, and unwavering support. My job was the one thing I never had to worry about—something that is truly rare. The compassion, care, and generosity Mid South shows daily leaves me in awe, and I am deeply grateful to be part of such an incredible organization.

🥰 What would you like to share about your personal life?

I am married and have a wonderful family, including my son, who will be graduating from college this May, my stepson, who graduated from high school last year, and our two dogs. I enjoy being outdoors—working in my yard, traveling, shopping, fishing, and spending quality time with family and friends. I am also a cancer survivor, and this past November marked two years with no evidence of disease, a milestone I am incredibly grateful for!

Meet Brittany Crane, SLP at Magee General Hospital. Happy , Brittany!

🎓 Where did you receive your education?

I graduated from Sylva Bay Academy in 2012. I then completed my associates degree at Copiah Lincoln Community College in Simpson County in 2014. In 2016, I graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with my bachelor's degree in communication disorders. Finally in 2021, I graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with my Masters in Speech Language Pathology.

❓What made you choose speech therapy as your career path?

I was able to shadow a Speech Language Pathologist after high school and hearing the flexibility and different options for career paths and specialties I decided you can never get bored in this field with so many options. I also knew whatever path I chose, I wanted to work in a medical setting.

🙏 Do you have any mentors or people you’d like to thank for your career experience?

The first person I need to recognize is my husband, Justin Crane. We have been married for 11 years, and he has watched all the highs and lows of college from my associates degree to my master's degree. He did nothing but encourage me all those years and continues to do so in my career now. Also, my parents who have been major advocates for my education and pushed me to get the education to make myself successful but also demonstrate God's love and compassion in every session with every patient I encounter.

✅ Do you have any special certifications or areas of focus in your work?

My focus is pediatric Autism. However, I have multiple certifications including Vital Stim/Dines, MBSimp, and Certified Autism Spectrum Disorder Clinical specialist. I also have the ASHA Distinguished Early Career Professional Award and two ACE awards. I am currently pursuing my certification in DIRFloortime certification, which is a child centered, play based therapy for individuals with developmental challenges, particularly autism focusing on building relationships and emotional connection.

🗣 What’s something you find yourself saying often to your patients?

Let's go play! Play therapy is an evidence-based approach where play is used to improve a child's communication, language, and social skills in a natural and engaging way. Play therapy makes therapy fun and feels less like a chore leading to greater progress and emotional development.

🙃 What do you think is often misunderstood about speech therapy?

"Nothing's wrong with my speech." I hear this more than I can count with my geriatric population. As a Speech Language pathologist, I can focus on cognitive linguistic skills, swallowing, voice, and speech/language skills.

🩵 What do you appreciate about working for Mid South Rehab Services?

Mid South allows me to be the therapist I need to be for my patients and their families. I can build a relationship to promote success with every individual that walks through our doors.

🥰 What would you like to share about your personal life?

I am married to Justin Crane of 11 years and we have two children Kimber (8), and Kaison (4). My children made me a better person and therapist throughout my career. Over a year ago, my son was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and we as a family have seen the highs and lows of this diagnosis on a personnel level. I think this has made me a dual advocate for children and adults with this diagnosis because not only do I focus my work on this area; I now live it as well. My daughter is the greatest sister to her baby brother and celebrates all his wins. God truly blessed me with the greatest children/family. I love you, Justin, Kimber, and Kaison!

Meet Bridgette Palmer, SLP at Brookdale Clinton. Happy , Bridgette!

🎓 Where did you receive your education?

Mississippi State University for undergraduate, Jackson State University for graduate degree

❓What made you choose speech therapy as your career path?

I started out in elementary education and during my senior year at Mississippi State I took a class that discussed all types of careers. I learned about Speech therapy in that class. I liked the idea I could help people of all ages in a variety of settings in smaller groups, so after graduating with a degree in education I began to pursue my Masters in Speech therapy.

🙏 Do you have any mentors or people you’d like to thank for your career experience?

I would like to thank Kim Rayburn. She has been with me since day one at Mid South. For 18 years, she has always been someone I can call when I need advice and have questions about the job. She takes the initiative to learn about her employees and their families.

✅ Do you have any special certifications or areas of focus in your work?

I am Vital Stim certified. I would like to pursue LSVT Loud training due to the increase in Parkinsons patients we are seeing the geriatric population.

🗣 What’s something you find yourself saying often to your patients?

We are doing exercises for your mind to keep you Sharp as a tack.

🙃 What do you think is often misunderstood about speech therapy?

In the geriatric population, we rarely teach people to "talk.” I have heard so many times when I introduce myself to our residents, "I don't need therapy, I know how to talk.” Speech therapy includes many different aspects including swallowing, safety training, memory training, organizing, planning, problem solving, not just word production.

🩵 What do you appreciate about working for Mid South Rehab Services?

What I like most about Mid South Rehab is their strong support system and their responsiveness to whenever I need help or need supplies for my facility or patients. I also value that I have a Regional Manger that is always supportive and helpful any time I need.

🥰 What would you like to share about your personal life?

I am married to my college sweetheart Justin and we have one daughter Avery who is 14. We have a dog, Maverick we adore. I love sports, reading, and good food. We spend most of our time attending Avery's activities: softball, golf, and piano. We love to travel and be outdoors.

Meet Kayla Williamson, SLP and DOR at Highlands Care Center. Happy , Kayla!

Where did you receive your education?
🎓 Undergraduate: Northeast Alabama Community College/University of South Alabama; Graduate: University of Montevallo

❓What made you choose speech therapy as your career path?
At the start of my college experience, I was undecided on the career I wanted to pursue. I always knew I wanted to help people with my career choice rather than just working for a paycheck. I had the amazing opportunity to shadow a speech therapist and was sold. The ability to provide a "voice,” whether verbal or metaphorical, to patients in various stages of life makes the hard and stressful times worth every second. I have a particular motivation and passion for swallowing. My family has personally seen the effects that swallowing difficulty has on socialization and quality of life. Being in the South, we often revolve our social gatherings around meals. The fact that I may be able to assist in restoring swallowing function or providing strategies to increase someone's confidence around food is fulfilling on another level.

🙏 Do you have any mentors or people you’d like to thank for your career experience?
Jasmine Young was my supervisor during my clinical fellowship year. She pushed me to have critical thinking skills and individualized treatments rather than falling into a routine. Since my clinical fellowship year, she continues to be my sounding board in various clinical situations and interpersonal relationships with other healthcare fields.

Heather Matthews was my Director of Rehab out of graduate school. She is now my Regional Clinical Director, and I couldn't think of anyone more deserving to lead. She has taught me the importance of patient advocacy not from direct training but by leading by example. Her heart for patient care as well as the therapist that service with her in her region is one in a million to find.

✅Do you have any special certifications or areas of focus in your work?
Soon, I would love to pursue a certification to become a Certified Dementia Practitioner.

🗣 What’s something you find yourself saying often to your patients?
"Swallow like you've got a golf ball stuck in your throat and your trying to push it down." I use this saying to help patients with implementing effortful swallow.

🙃 What do you think is often misunderstood about speech therapy?
I wish people understood that speech therapy is more than just talking. "I talk just fine," is a constant phrase I hear when introducing myself to a patient. The cognitive and swallow aspects of a speech therapist's responsibilities are often more prevalent in the geriatric population.

💙 What do you appreciate about working for Mid South Rehab Services?
Since joining the company last October, I love the faith aspect that has been woven into this company. Many companies ask you to separate your faith from your work. My faith is a pivotal part of my life, and God blessed me with the gift and desire to want to help others. It is amazing to work for a company that encourages you to use your gifts to improve your care of your patients. Another aspect I have noticed about the leadership of this company is their ability to listen when concerns are raised.

🥰 What would you like to share about your personal life?
I have two beautiful nieces. Alayah who is 1 and Oaklynn who is 1 month old. I enjoy traveling. My goal is to go to all 50 states, but I have a long way to go!

✨ More about Kayla: Work is easy when you enjoy the people working alongside you. I genuinely believe the team I have surrounding me pushes you and holds you accountable to be the best therapist for your patients. We pick each other up when times are tough and praise each other's successes. My team is my family. I know I can rely on them to be there for me professionally, but most importantly, personally.

Meet Megan Brown, SLP at Meadville Convalescent Home. Happy , Megan!

🎓 Where did you receive your education?
I earned my undergraduate degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and completed my Master's Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders at Southeastern Louisiana University.

❓ What made you choose speech therapy as your career path?
I chose this field because my aunt is a speech-language pathologist, and she really inspired me. She’s worked in a lot of different settings, including the nursing home where I work now, so I’ve been able to see firsthand the impact SLPs have. That experience played a big role in my decision to become one myself.

🙏 Do you have any mentors or people you’d like to thank for your career experience?
I’d definitely say my aunt has been one of my biggest mentors. She’s given me so much guidance and advice over the years. I’ve also been really lucky to work with some amazing speech therapists throughout my career, and many of them I still keep in touch with today. Along with speech therapists, I’ve had the opportunity to work with incredible PTs and OTs who have made a huge impression on me and my career. They’ve helped me see the patient as a whole and have really improved my treatment strategies. So many of them have also helped me navigate this ever-changing therapy world and grow in my clinical decision-making.

✅ Do you have any special certifications or areas of focus in your work?
I’m certified in VitalStim and LSVT Loud, and I recently completed training in Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES). I really enjoy working with dysphagia, especially following CVAs. I’m always looking for opportunities to continue learning and expanding my skills to better support my patients.

🗣 What’s something you find yourself saying often to your patients?
I don’t really have one specific phrase I say all the time, but I really enjoy getting to know my patients. I love hearing their life stories and learning about their experiences, especially how the world has changed over the years from their perspective. Those conversations are always really meaningful to me.

🙃 What do you think is often misunderstood about speech therapy?
One thing I often find is misunderstood is the scope of what our field actually covers. A lot of people think speech therapy is only about talking, and I often hear, “I can talk just fine.” But we do so much more than that. Our work includes cognition, swallowing, voice, and so many functional aspects of communication and safety that people don’t always realize.

💙 What do you appreciate about working for Mid South Rehab Services?
I really appreciate the support I’ve received from Mid South Rehab Services during one of the most difficult times in my life. My husband unexpectedly passed away, and the company has been incredibly compassionate and understanding throughout everything. Being known, supported, and cared for by my workplace during such a personal loss has truly meant a great deal to me.

⚾ What would you like to share about your personal life?
I have two boys, Carter (11) and Cooper (7). I live in Meadville, MS, very close to where I work, which I feel very fortunate about. My boys are very active—they play baseball and soccer—so my life is usually filled with ballgames and practices. When I’m not at games or practice, I enjoy gardening and traveling. We’ve always loved going places and spending time together as a family.

Meet Grace Sepko, SLP at Yalobusha General Hospital. Happy , Grace!

🎓 Where did you receive your education?
I graduated with my undergraduate at The Ohio State University and went on to receive my master's degree at Bowling Green State University (BGSU OH).

❓ What made you choose speech therapy as your career path?
At first, I found out about being an SLP after my brother went to speech for language development. It brought me so much joy seeing how his communication grew. In undergrad, my choice was solidified after realizing my love for helping others communicate.

🙏 Do you have any mentors or people you’d like to thank for your career experience?
I have had so many amazing mentors who have helped me along the way in my career. During grad school/CF year, my mentors that helped build my confidence and knowledge the most were Bethany, Kayla, Tessa, Laura, Kelsey, and Erin. Currently, I have to give many, many, many thanks to my amazing coworkers Anna and Ashley who have so much wisdom and experience; they have truly blessed my first full year as an SLP.

✅ Do you have any special certifications or areas of focus in your work?
I recently became certified in the SPEAK OUT! program for Parkinson's patients. I love learning about dysphagia/swallow anatomy and would love to be certified in FEES at some point in time.

🗣 What’s something you find yourself saying often to your patients?
I often enjoy greeting my patients as if they are young/hip (e.g., "Hey girl!"). They always get a good laugh and often follow along after the first few times.
Also I often have to say "No, I am not the nurse. I am speech therapy. No, not for speech, we are going to get that brain engaged!"

🙃 What do you think is often misunderstood about speech therapy?
Often, people think we just deal with speech/articulation with kiddos. However, there is so much more under our umbrella of care (e.g., cognition, language, swallowing, voice, etc.). Also, just because you may need speech therapy does not mean you are not intelligent or any less of a person! We are here to help you thrive and live independent lives with friends and family.

💙 What do you appreciate about working for Mid South Rehab Services?
I really love all of my coworkers and the environment I get to work in daily. Mid South has been such a God wink moving from Ohio to Mississippi after getting married and being able to work for a company that is so much more than just a company/ It truly is a family, one who cares and loves for others.

🥰 What would you like to share about your personal life?
I just got married in June 2025 to my husband Jackson Sepko. We met while I was still living in Cincinnati, OH, and he had a job at U of L athletics. I am the oldest of 5 siblings, the youngest two are still in high school, and I LOVE talking about them/bragging about them to anyone who wants to listen. I am a big Survivor fan (thanks to my husband for introducing the show to me). We love taking walks around our neighborhood and being with family for sporting events.
