❓ What made you choose speech therapy as your career path?
From a young age, I was fascinated by voice acting—specifically the voices I heard when watching Saturday morning cartoons, but it wasn’t something I wanted to pursue as a career. It wasn’t until I met my mother-in-law, who is an SLP, and learned that part of the field includes an understanding of the mechanics behind voice and speech. My interest sparked.
As I became more immersed in the field, I discovered I truly enjoyed all aspects of it, not just the voicing, but also, hearing, cognition, swallowing and how all of those systems are connected to the rest of the body.
🙏 Do you have any mentors or people you’d like to thank for your career experience
My mother-in-law, Vicki Merritt, for introducing me to the field and continuing to be a valuable resource, especially given her experience as a Director of Rehab. Dr. Carolyn Higdon and the late Dr. Lennette Ivy and for their passion and high expectations for their students. Whitney Stafford Holmes for helping guide me through my Clinical Fellowship Year. On a personal note, Anna Sullivan Way, who went out of her way to find a cognition screener for me during my own inpatient recovery after a motor vehicle accident.
✅ Do you have any special certifications or areas of focus in your work?
I became Vital-Stim certified in 2021, which is a therapy that uses electrical stimulation to strengthen throat muscles and treat dysphagia. I plan to pursue certification in FEES (Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing), a portable swallow study using a small endoscopic camera.
🗣 What’s something you find yourself saying often to your patients?
“That’s a big bite!” and I frequently ask, “How’s today been?” instead of “How are you doing?”—especially with geriatric patients. It encourages more open, positive conversation and helps build rapport beyond just their medical condition.
🙃 What do you think is often misunderstood about speech therapy?
Many people associate speech therapy only with the school setting and assume it’s just about speaking clearly. In the medical setting, therapy often focuses on much more—cognition, feeding issues, swallowing disorders, etc. I spend a lot of time helping patients understand how these services directly benefit their quality of life.
💙 What do you appreciate about working for Mid South Rehab Services?
I will always appreciate the support the company showed my family and I during and after my motor vehicle accident. I also respect their commitment to being a Christian-based organization and their willingness to remain steadfast in that identity.
👨👩👦👦 What would you like to share about your personal life?
I’ve been married for nineteen years to my wonderful wife, Miranda. We have two sons, Jack (12) and Mack (6). The two of them and their antics keep me on my toes and bring me immense joy.
