Recently, MAFP gained 65 new student members while attending two residency fairs for medical students in Mississippi. William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine held their statewide Residency Fair and the University of Mississippi Medical Center held their GME Recruitment Fair.

MAFP Public Awareness Director Blake Butler and MAFP Foundation and Workforce Director Beth Wilson attended the WCUCOM Residency Fair where they met with students interested in Family Medicine. Beth and Blake shared information about the Academy, student involvement with MAFP and the Tar Wars Program, and encouraged attendees to sign up as student members.

Beth Wilson participated in UMMC's GME Recruitment Fair. This year's them was the "Wide Wide World of Family Medicine", where students had the opportunity to learn about the different aspects of family medicine including research/QI, community engagement, wellness/resiliency, residency and fellowships, student interest group and MAFP.

We want to congratulate William Carey Universtiy College of Osteopathic Medicine Student Sam Ogunbode on his appointment to serve as an AAFP Family Medicine Interest Group Network Regional Coordinator.

Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) Network Regional Coordinators play a crucial role in facilitating collaboration and connections between students and local FMIGs. Regional coordinators communicate with FMIG leaders at each medical school in their respective region, serve as a resource for information about the AAFP, and assist with FMIG programming.

Sam completed his Associate of Science degree at South Suburban College & his Bachelor of Science degree at Northern Illinois University. Sam is currently in his third year at William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

The MAFP Foundation was proud to participate in the Mississippi HOSA–Future Health Professionals Fall Leadership Conference in Vicksburg last week! This year’s “Champions of Change” theme inspired students to explore careers in healthcare through hands-on learning and leadership.

MAFP Foundation and Workforce Director, Beth Wilson, and Public Awareness Director, Blake Butler were on hand to share with students about MAFP and a future in Family Medicine in Mississippi.

We loved connecting with passionate future health leaders and sharing what makes family medicine so special. 29 students joined our new email list for those interested in pursuing medicine — part of our ongoing effort to grow Mississippi’s future physician workforce!

We are deeply saddened by the passing of longtime Mississippi Family Physician, Dr. William “Bill” Jackson who served the people of Corinth and surrounding areas since 1976.

A Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Dr. Jackson was a dedicated leader within the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians, serving in every officer role and as MAFP President in 2002–03. He also represented Mississippi nationally at the AAFP Congress of Delegates. Dr. Jackson was honored with the MAFP Family Physician of the Year award in 2019.

Dr. Jackson was known for his unwavering commitment to his community through his work with the Corinth Historical Commission, the Boy Scouts of America, Past President of the Corinth YMCA, and the Boys Club of Corinth. He also helped train future physicians as a preceptor for third year medical students from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and the Magnolia Regional Health Center Internal Medicine Program.

Dr. Jackson’s life and legacy reflect the very best of family medicine. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, colleagues, and the Corinth community. The MAFP has sent a memorial gift to the MAFP Foundation in Dr. Jackson's memory.
