Postpartum depression (PPD) is becoming more common. Between 2010 and 2021, rates of PPD nearly doubled. For Black women, they almost tripled.

Yet even with this higher risk, Black mamas are still screened and treated less often. Research shows Black mothers are about 46% less likely to be screened for postpartum depression, and fewer than 37% receive treatment for maternal mental health conditions—compared to about 67% of white women (Columbia University).

PPD doesn’t always look like “sad all the time.” It can feel like:

🌧️ Feeling heavy, numb, or like you’re moving through the day in a fog
🔥 Getting irritated or angry more easily than usual
💔 Feeling guilty or ashamed because you “should be happy,” but you don’t
🌪️ Constant worry, racing thoughts, or feeling on edge and overwhelmed
🫧 Feeling distant or disconnected from your baby, your body, or yourself

These numbers are more than statistics—they reflect the lived experiences of so many mothers, especially Black mothers, who are carrying so much in silence.

Our moms deserve support. It’s okay to talk with your healthcare provider or a trusted mental health professional about how you’re feeling.

📞 If you or someone you know is not sure where to start? You can call the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline: 1-833-TLC-MAMA for free, confidential support and help finding resources.

The new 2025 Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health report confirms what so many moms have already been feeling — our systems are simply not showing up for our mamas. More than half the country is failing mothers, with 19 states receiving Ds or Fs. Mississippi received an F, which shows just how urgently we need stronger support and better maternal healthcare systems.

When I read this report, I immediately thought back to my conversation with Ms. Linda Dixon from the Mississippi Center for Justice. We talked about how the One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBA) cuts and other threats to women’s healthcare make it even harder for moms to get the care they deserve. These aren’t just policy conversations — these are decisions that shape real people’s lives. I’m pinning a 2-minute clip from that conversation if you’d like to watch it.

The Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health report also calls out several serious gaps that mothers are living through every day:

🌸 More than 50% of mothers with Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADS) s never receive treatment
🌸 Only 1 in 5 birthing people are screened for maternal mental health
🌸 Only 8 states have strong insurance coverage for maternal mental health services
🌸 Only 4 states require provider training in maternal mental health

These numbers reflect what so many mamas are experiencing — feeling overwhelmed, overlooked, and unsure of where to turn for help.

💜 Thank You, TrueCare MS! 💜

We are incredibly honored to receive the TrueCare MS Community Champion Grant of $8,500 in support of our upcoming "Holding Space: Maternal Health Resource Expo", sponsored by our philanthropic arm, Therapy Plus Foundation.

This generous support is so much more than funding—it is an investment in Mississippi mamas, babies, and families who deserve compassionate, person-centered care and accessible maternal mental health support.

Because of TrueCare MS, we will be able to:
✨ Provide free maternal wellness kits
✨ Offer grounding + self-care activities for moms
✨ Bring local providers and community resources directly to families
✨ Create a healing space where mamas feel seen, supported, and not alone

This expo is designed to meet real needs in our community—needs that often go unnoticed or unmet. TrueCare MS’s partnership helps us bridge those gaps with warmth, dignity, and hope.

From the Therapy Plus Foundation team and all the mothers who will benefit… thank you for believing in this work! 💜

We can’t wait to hold space together this March.

In light of the recent viral clips showing two Black mothers experiencing mistreatment in healthcare settings (whle in active labor) in Texas and Indiana, I’ve been sitting with the emotional weight these stories carry and the trauma they can surface for so many of us. They also brought me back to my conversation with Dr. Leslie Farrington MD in September. In this clip, Dr. Farrington shares her powerful ACTT framework and reminds us how important it is for mothers to tell their birth stories—not only to empower and validate their own experiences, but also to name, identify, and challenge mistreatment within healthcare systems.

These two women’s stories went viral, but imagine how many more stories go unheard and undocumented. The Maternal Mental Health Leadership Alliance (MMHLA) reports that 1 in 3 mothers feel traumatized by their birth experience, and 1 in 5 report some form of mistreatment during pregnancy and childbirth. Women of color are at increased risk for both birth trauma and obstetric complications.

If this brings up feelings for you, you are not alone. Your story matters. Centering mothers’ voices in this way is a trauma-informed step toward healing, accountability, and real change.

Postpartum Support International offers a Birth & Medical Trauma Support Group for those who have experienced difficult or traumatic birth and medical experiences.

This free, virtual group provides a compassionate, understanding space to connect with others who have been through something similar. 💜

💗 Understanding Postpartum OCD: What Every Mom Should Know

Postpartum Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is one of the least talked-about maternal mental health conditions — yet it affects many new moms. 💭

Mothers with postpartum OCD often experience unwanted, intrusive thoughts that feel scary or distressing — such as fears of harm coming to their baby, or worries about contamination, safety, or control. These thoughts are ego-dystonic, meaning they go against what the mother truly believes or wants.

💡 Here’s what’s important to know:
• Having these thoughts does not mean you’re a danger to your baby.
• These thoughts are symptoms, not reflections of who you are.
• Postpartum OCD is treatable with therapy, support, and sometimes medication.

If you or someone you love is struggling with upsetting thoughts after giving birth, please remember — you are not alone, and help is available. 💕

Let’s keep breaking the silence around maternal mental health.
You deserve peace, support, and healing. 🌼

🌿 Let’s continue our conversation about “Birthing Trauma.”

Birth trauma is real—and it matters. Too many mothers leave the delivery room carrying invisible wounds that can impact their mental health long after the physical recovery.

Birth trauma can lead to maternal mental health (MMH) conditions, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These are not signs of weakness—they are signs of a story that deserves compassion, validation, and support.

And we must name this truth: Women of color are at increased risk for both poor interpersonal care and obstetric complications, heightening the likelihood of birth trauma. Healing and prevention require listening to these experiences and building systems rooted in empathy, respect, and accountability.

💜 If you or someone you love needs help or someone to talk to:
