Dr. Anita Henderson of the Hattiesburg Clinic highlights how presumptive Medicaid eligibility allows low‑income pregnant women to begin prenatal care immediately (up to 60 days) while their application is processed. With nearly 57% of births paid through Medicaid, early access in the first trimester means vital screenings for hypertension, diabetes, anemia and better outcomes.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Tom Joiner — a past MSMA President, a pillar of Mississippi medicine, and a man whose heart for service shaped the lives of countless physicians and patients across our state. Dr. Joiner was more than a leader — he was a mentor, a guide, and a steady hand during times of change. His passion for medicine was matched only by his unwavering belief in those around him.

Until his recent illness, Dr. Joiner continued to serve the profession he loved as Chief Medical Officer at Molina Healthcare of Mississippi, President and Chairman of the Mississippi Physician Care Network Board of Directors, and a member of the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure.

Among the many lives he touched is his niece, Dr. Jennifer Bryan. His influence helped shape her into the leader and advocate she is today — a living testament to his legacy.

To honor his extraordinary life and support future physicians called to serve others, the family has established the Dr. Thomas E. Joiner Memorial Fund at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. In lieu of flowers, contributions to this fund will help carry forward the work he held so dear. To help his family honor him, you may contribute directly at: https://umc.edu/Development/How/Funds/Thomas-Joiner.html

The Mississippi State Department of Health has issued a health advisory regarding the growing dangers of kratom and its synthetic derivatives—especially 7-hydroxymitragynine, which is significantly more potent than morphine.

📈 The Mississippi Poison Control Center has seen a spike in serious cases, including cardiac and respiratory arrest in young adults. Most involved excessive or repeated use over a short period.

🚫 Effective July 1, House Bill 1077 prohibits kratom sales to anyone under 21 and bans high-potency synthetic formulations.

Providers: Be alert. Consider kratom toxicity in unexplained overdoses and report all exposures to MPCC at 1-800-222-1222.
