The Coast Counties and Singing River Component Societies recently partnered to host a meet and greet bringing Gulf Coast physicians together for a meaningful conversation with Secretary of State Michael Watson. The event provided an opportunity for physicians to discuss key issues, strengthen relationships with state leadership, and highlight the challenges and successes of practicing medicine on the Coast. The event also marked Dr. Katherine Pannel's first component society visit of her MSMA presidency, where she shared an update on her presidency and the state of the association.

As we head into winter, Mississippi State Medical Association President Dr. Katherine Pannel says the recent drop in flu, RSV, and COVID-19 cases is hopeful… but far from a guarantee.

“Last year we saw not one — but two peaks,” she warns: once in Dec/Jan and another in February.

That’s why she’s urging everyone to get vaccinated (flu, COVID, RSV), stay alert for whooping cough, use good hygiene, and stay home if you’re feverish.

Don’t let down your guard — getting protected now could spare Mississippi a rough winter.

This afternoon, Dr. Avani Patel delivered compelling testimony before Reference Committee B on Resolution 225. Speaking as a private practice founder, she emphasized the urgency surrounding private equity, corporate ownership, and the protection of physician autonomy — while underscoring the legal complexity of federal CPOM legislation. Dr. Patel advocated for referral to the AMA Board to allow for a thorough, disciplined review that strengthens physician leadership without unintended consequences for rural or safety-net practices. We’re proud of her thoughtful leadership and commitment to getting this right for physicians and patients alike.
