Children's feet, ankles, and lower bodies should not hurt, regardless of the severity of the pain.

These warning signs are indicators of issues and/or ongoing conditions that may require medical attention:

-Complaining of pain, cramping, or numbness in the foot, ankle, knee, hip, and lower back

-Repetitive recurring injuries relative to the feet, ankles, or lower body extremities (legs, knees, hips, or back)

-Fatigue

-Can’t keep up during sports-related activities

-Avoiding sports and physical activities

-Stumbling or tripping

-Trouble sleeping

-Hiding their feet

-Rolling of the ankle

-Change in gait

-Poor posture

These issues, injuries, and conditions need to be corrected and treated early on to prevent further damage, worsening conditions, and the possibility of lifelong pain and suffering.

Some are more noticeable than others, but regardless, the good news is that almost all of them can be easily and effectively treated with a custom orthotic.

Just as conditioning strengthens the body and practice sharpens skills, a thorough lower body exam ensures that the foundation of performance is solid. By prioritizing this proactive step, athletes can protect themselves from injury, maximize their performance, and set themselves up for success not only this season but for many more to come.

To schedule your comprehensive biomechanical evaluation, contact us or call our Sports Medicine Podiatry Center and book an appointment at our Marlton, N.J. Sports Medicine Facility or Ridley Park, P.A. Office location with one of our podiatric sports medicine specialists today by calling (610) 522-9200.

Check out our most recent blog post discussing the importance of pre-season biomechanical examinations and screenings for athletes prior to each season:

https://www.drleecohen.com/blog-drleecohen-sports-medicine-podiatry/why-every-athlete-should-have-a-lower-body-examination-and-biomechanical-screening-by-a-sports-medicine-podiatrist-before-each-season

A preseason podiatric exam goes far beyond checking for pain or past injuries. It provides a detailed look at alignment, biomechanics, flexibility, strength, and footwear supports critical components of both injury prevention and performance optimization.

Dr. Cohen shown demonstrating normal vs. abnormal gait pattern of a track and football athlete who is suffering from faulty foot mechanics, which can cause him to feel pain in his feet and lower body, and increase his risk of injury.

Custom orthotics will help to level out the imbalance caused by the athlete’s faulty biomechanics and correct the abnormal motion, demonstrated by Dr. Cohen, so that he can go further faster, pain-free.

If you or someone that you care for suffers from pain in the feet, ankles, knees, hips, and/or lower back, the pain may be due to misalignment caused by faulty biomechanics, which can be treated and corrected with the help of custom orthotic insoles.

Our feet are the foundation of our body’s movement, and when something is misaligned, it can throw everything off balance. One common but often overlooked structural issue is forefoot varus. If you're dealing with chronic foot pain, ankle instability, or even higher issues in your knees or hips, forefoot varus might be playing a role.

Forefoot varus is a congenital foot deformity where the front part of the foot (the forefoot) is inverted relative to the rearfoot when the subtalar joint is in a neutral position. In simpler terms, the inside of the foot sits higher off the ground than it should, especially when standing flat. This misalignment can force the foot to compensate in ways that lead to pain and dysfunction.

If you’re experiencing recurring pain, unusual wear on your shoes, or postural imbalances, it’s worth having your foot structure evaluated. The earlier you address the problem, the easier it is to prevent long-term complications.

Dr. Cohen shown performing gait analysis on a college football and track athlete who suffers from Flatfeet and Limb Length Discrepancy, two conditions commonly seen by our team of sports medicine podiatry specialists, and treated with the help of custom orthotics.

Custom orthotics will help alleviate pain and discomfort caused by these conditions, equalize leg length, and correct any additional imbalances resulting from the athlete’s unequal leg length.

Custom orthotics will also help to improve the athlete’s foot alignment, reducing pressure caused by the imbalance (by helping to evenly distribute his weight), absorbing shock, and helping to correct the imbalances caused by his faulty biomechanics due to his flatfooted condition, thus helping reduce his risk of further injury.

If you've ever felt a nagging ache around your kneecap after a long run, hike, or even just going up and down stairs, you're not alone. This condition, commonly known as runner’s knee, is formally referred to as patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). While it’s frequently associated with athletes, it can affect anyone whose movement patterns put extra stress on the knee joint.

Check out our latest blog post discussing the mechanics behind runners' knee, the chain reaction that leads to this type of knee pain, prevention and treatment options:

Torn ACLs are a serious and all-too-common injury, especially among athletes in cutting, pivoting, and jumping sports like soccer, basketball, and football. But what if we told you that many ACL injuries are preventable? At our sports medicine podiatry practice, we take ACL risk seriously and use a comprehensive screening approach that looks at the entire lower body, not just the knee.

To take a deeper look at some of the key physical traits and movement patterns we assess during an ACL screening, check out our most recent blog post:
