We’ve spent a lot of time talking about Jamie’s journey of physical recovery but we haven’t talked much about Jamie’s mental health journey. Since today marks the last day of PTSD awareness month, it feels like a good time to do just that.
We have all experienced trauma in our lives and we all have dealt with those traumas in different ways. Not everyone will develop PTSD and certain traumas, like violence, carry a higher risk. Some symptoms of PTSD include flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and other sleep disturbances. Treatment includes talk therapy and medication, and a strong support system.
Jamie went through something horrific. Something most of us can’t imagine going through. Because of this trauma and lack of closure, Jamie recently received a PTSD diagnosis and began the long process of healing. This journey is very different from healing physically, it’s more personal and requires a different kind of grit. We are playing catch up as early intervention is most beneficial but we are seeing incredible growth and healing. Each day I see a bit more of Jamie coming back; he has color in his face, a sparkle back in his eyes and a genuine smile we haven’t seen in far too long.
Jamie very recently added a companion to join his journey. Cats can help reduce anxiety, blood pressure, heart rate and their purring promotes relaxation. Richard has wasted no time making himself right at home. 💚💙
