So thrilled to be working with Swarthmore’s engineering students, Jacey Koh and Owen Lord (both rising sophomores), with the amazing leadership of Dr. Joseph Towles, an Associate Professor in the Engineering Department at Swarthmore. These bright minds are helping solve “real problems.” They’re taking daily issues we have as PTs and addressing them with their engineering prowess.

✅ Designing and coding a computer application
✅ Developing cost-effective sensors
✅ Making the process user and clinician friendly
✅ Testing and retesting – designing and redesigning

It’s amazing to see the work they’re able to do and I’m so grateful for this collaboration between Move Well PT and Swarthmore’s burgeoning Neuromuscular Biomechanics Lab (NMBL).

An overdue congratulations to our therapists Maria and Dave on becoming CERTIFIED ORTHOPEDIC MANUAL THERAPISTS! This is a difficult journey that culminated in a challenging exam in New York City, testing all their treatment methods against the best available evidence. Their hard work and dedication throughout the process of this certification was wonderful to see. All of our therapists are ready and able to help you with your joints, but this certification exam really put them to the test and they rose to the occasion.

⚖️ BALANCE ⚖️

This can have a different definition for every person, what kind of balance is needed for your life and how do you plan to improve it for 2025?

As PTs, we often hear “oh ya I have good balance” then when tested it’s a big “whoops!”

It could also be a report that “I have terrible balance!” then when tested it’s pretty darn solid. That being said, we don’t often challenge our balance systems knowingly until it’s too late.

In PT we go over what activities are important to you then break down all the components and assess them to determine where any work could be done so that task is more successful.

Balance is maintained with our eyes to orient visually to the world around us, our sensations in our feet through pressure to know if we’re leaning or stepping on something uneven and our inner ear that tells us if we’re moving forwards/backwards or around. Depending on what you’d like to be able to do, the systems that would be most important to train may vary. They will also vary throughout your life as activities change.

A PT evaluation would tease out where things could be improved to improve your reflexes and get you back to safe and successful movement.

Wait…what’s this? I thought it was chalked up to sadness from gloomy weather causing migraines and more pain..cue the sarcasm.

How does a low pressure system affect you? Looking at multiple factors like weather, life events, stress, recent foods eaten and thinking about how you feel on a given day can help you gain insight into how hard to push yourself.

Always look at the whole picture if you can. Your body is a network of interdependent systems. Join us on Election Day at the .center to see if current events are having any impact on one of the most important vital signs…blood pressure!!

So take a breath, enjoy the colors on the trees, and understand there are some factors we can’t control that may make us feel worse temporarily, but on the other side, we’ll just come out tougher and more resilient.
