Hey friends! I just wanted to hop on and thank you all for sticking around! I haven't been able to take doula clients for about a year since I've been working full time to get my husband through this last semester of school. However, I have been able to do a lot behind the scenes building up my client resources, solidifying my branding, and learning more so I can help YOU! My beloved clients, friends, and fellow birth workers. Stay tuned in the coming weeks and months for more content surrounding all things pregnancy, birth, postpartum and women's health! Let me know in the comments what you want to see more of!

Mama you are powerful!! I named my business "Empowered Birthing" because I truly belive that everyone deserves to feel empowered in their birthing space. A doula is just one of the tools in your bag that can help you feel empowered and supported in your birth, during the postpartum period and beyond!

I’ve realized that a lot of parents don’t even know what their options are when choosing where to have their baby!
Some things to keep in mind when making this decision are:

❓What are your goals for this birth? How do you want to be cared for?
❓Where your provider practices
❓What does your insurance cover?
❓Is your pregnancy considered “high risk?”
❓Where do you live and what hospitals are close by?

1️⃣Homebirth

Usually attended by a Midwife. Be aware that some states have restrictions on breech babies, multiples, or VBACs at home. You can control who is or is not at your birth, the atmosphere, etc. Usually pain medication (epidural, etc.) is not an option at home. Complications or emergencies require a transfer to a hospital.

2️⃣ Freestanding Birth Center

This is a place specifically designed to provide a comfortable, “home like” environment. It is common to have your chosen friends and family at your birth. Births are usually attended by Midwives, with the same restrictions as a home birth. Some medical equipment is available, most do not offer pain medication for labor. Many are close to hospitals in case a transfer is necessary.

3️⃣ In-Hospital Birthing Center

Either within or next to a hospital. Some hospitals call their maternity wing a “birth center”, be aware of this distinction. You will still be giving birth in a hospital, though many in hospital birth centers practice more family centered care and are more equipped to assist an unmediated birth, if desired. Can be attended by most providers.

4️⃣ Hospital Birth

All medical equipment is available if a complication arises or pain medication is desired. Depending on the hospital and their policies, your care will usually be more “managed”. Hospitals usually limit the number of people you may have with you. Some hospitals are extremely supportive of unmedicated birth, some are not.

No matter where you choose to birth, remember you are in charge! Don’t be afraid to ask more questions or change your mind if something doesn’t feel right to you. A doula can be a great asset no matter where you choose to birth! Tell me in the comments what you chose and why! Did you love it? What would you change?

You guys! Its been a hot minute since I've been on social media and I wanted wanted say thank you for being patient with me! I don't know why I thought starting a doula business with a busy 10 month old would be easy 😅 So thanks for sticking around!

Did you know?? You can see a Midwife or Certified Nurse Midwife as your primary care provider even if you've never been pregnant! I'm allll about cutting the crap and making people aware of their options here, and this is one that's a little bit lesser known!

A Midwife or CNM provides all the same well checks, tests, & procedures as an OB/Gyn with one exception: they do not perform surgery. If you have a condition or concern that is outside their area of expertise, a midwife would refer you to a specialist just like any other provider would.

Statistically, Midwives are able to spend a little more time in the room with their patients than a Family Doctor, Nurse Practitioner or OB/GYN. This can be great for a a lot of reasons, but my favorite is that it makes it possible for you to establish a relationship with them! We want you to feel comfortable asking questions and getting answers about your own Healthcare so you can make informed choices. 🙂

Do you see a Midwife or CNM?? What do you love about them?

Choosing the right provider for you is an essential part of your birth experience. They're an important player on your team!
You need someone you can trust, who respects you as a patient and your right to informed choice.
Really what it comes down to is what's important to YOU! What kind of birth experience do you want to have? What are your goals?

Here are some places to start:

🏡Ask people you trust, and people that live in your community for recommendations. Many communities have moms groups, bulletin boards or Facebook groups!

💻See who your insurance covers, & read Google or Healthgrade reviews

🔍Once you find someone, INTERVIEW THEM! Remember your provider works for you. You never have to stick with someone you aren't confident with!

📒Ask how they feel about topics that are important to you, & pay attention to how they respond. Try to avoid yes or no questions or opportunities for them to agree with whatever you say 😬 Here are some examples of things you might ask:

❓What kind of births do you normally support?
❓Will you be the one that delivers my baby or will it be someone else in your office?
❓What is your rate of induction, cesarean or episiotomy?
❓Do you have expectations of when I should spontaneously go into labor? If I go past a certain date, will you push me to have an induction?
❓I don't want an episiotomy. Are you comfortable using heat, oil, or other means to help prevent tearing?
❓How do you feel about my having a doula present to support me? Have you worked with doulas in the past?

This should be an open dialogue between the two of you. Pay attention to how the conversation makes you feel. Did you feel validated in your concerns? Respected? Did the provider listen to you, and did you feel like they cared about what was important to you?

Remember, it's never too late to switch!

🩺 A note if you desire a VBAC:

When you are interviewing a provider, try to find someone that's not only VBAC tolerant, but VBAC friendly. Some providers will still have expectations about when you "should" go into labor, which could result in induction or another c-section.

Do you have a provider you love?? Tell me what you love about them!!
