Choosing the right provider for you is an essential part of your birth experience. They're an important player on your team!
You need someone you can trust, who respects you as a patient and your right to informed choice.
Really what it comes down to is what's important to YOU! What kind of birth experience do you want to have? What are your goals?
Here are some places to start:
🏡Ask people you trust, and people that live in your community for recommendations. Many communities have moms groups, bulletin boards or Facebook groups!
💻See who your insurance covers, & read Google or Healthgrade reviews
🔍Once you find someone, INTERVIEW THEM! Remember your provider works for you. You never have to stick with someone you aren't confident with!
📒Ask how they feel about topics that are important to you, & pay attention to how they respond. Try to avoid yes or no questions or opportunities for them to agree with whatever you say 😬 Here are some examples of things you might ask:
❓What kind of births do you normally support?
❓Will you be the one that delivers my baby or will it be someone else in your office?
❓What is your rate of induction, cesarean or episiotomy?
❓Do you have expectations of when I should spontaneously go into labor? If I go past a certain date, will you push me to have an induction?
❓I don't want an episiotomy. Are you comfortable using heat, oil, or other means to help prevent tearing?
❓How do you feel about my having a doula present to support me? Have you worked with doulas in the past?
This should be an open dialogue between the two of you. Pay attention to how the conversation makes you feel. Did you feel validated in your concerns? Respected? Did the provider listen to you, and did you feel like they cared about what was important to you?
Remember, it's never too late to switch!
🩺 A note if you desire a VBAC:
When you are interviewing a provider, try to find someone that's not only VBAC tolerant, but VBAC friendly. Some providers will still have expectations about when you "should" go into labor, which could result in induction or another c-section.
Do you have a provider you love?? Tell me what you love about them!!
