Last week we shared about the interdisciplinary team and named its members. Now we want to share a little about the role each member plays as part of the Hospice Care Team.
This week, let’s focus on the physician and what they do.
The Hospice physician works with the hospice nurses, social workers, and other professionals to create and implement the care plan that meets both the physical and emotional care needs of the hospice patient and their family. They are responsible for providing palliative (comfort care) aiming to relieve pain and improve their quality of life during their hospice journey.
Key Responsibilities of a Hospice Physician:
Pain and Symptom Management:
Hospice physicians are experts in managing pain and other symptoms associated with terminal illnesses, such as shortness of breath, nausea, and fatigue.
Patient and Family Support:
They provide emotional and spiritual support to both the patient and their family, helping them cope with the challenges of a terminal illness and the end-of-life process.
Care Planning:
Hospice physicians play a crucial role in developing and overseeing the individualized care plan, ensuring it aligns with the patient's goals and preferences.
Collaboration:
They work closely with other members of the hospice team, as well as the patient's primary care physician, to ensure seamless and coordinated care.
Medical Oversight:
They certify the patient's eligibility for hospice care and recertify their need for it throughout the course of care.
Education and Communication:
They educate patients, families, and other team members about the hospice philosophy and the patient's condition.
Quality Assurance:
They participate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities to ensure the hospice provides the best possible care.
Key Differences from Other Physicians:
Focus on Comfort and Quality of Life:
Unlike many physicians who aim to cure or treat illnesses, hospice physicians focus on maximizing a patient's comfort and quality of life during their final days.
Time and Attention:
Hospice physicians often have more time to spend with each patient and their family, allowing for a more personal and supportive approach.
End-of-Life Expertise:
They are specifically trained to address the unique needs of terminally ill patients and their families, including pain management, symptom control, and emotional support.
