Berries may slow brain aging by as much as two and a half years. Eating just one cup of blueberries a day has been shown to improve long-term memory in older adults. You can even correlate the cognitive improvements with enhanced brain activation by using state-of-the-art brain scan technology to actually visualize the improved blood flow to those same regions of the brain caused by the blueberry consumption.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study on children compared about one cup of blueberries to two cups and none at all. What did the researchers find? Blueberries improved cognitive performance, and the more berries, the better. And, the improvements weren't seen after 12 weeks of eating berries, but within hours of just a single meal with blueberries.

If you eat blueberries week after week, you also get chronic benefits, such as reduced artery stiffness and a boost in your natural killer cells, which are one of your body’s natural first lines of defense against viral infections and cancer.

Berries are some of the most healthful foods we should include in our daily routine. This is why they have their own special category in Dr. Greger’s Daily Dozen checklist. Download the free Daily Dozen app today, and start ticking off your daily servings of berries.

The cutting edge of medicine is largely focused on longevity through genetic manipulation, nanotechnology, and advances in cellular science. While most of this is still in the realm of science fiction, the good news is that we already know a great deal about how to extend human life and health. Ther...

During the month of September we are focusing on weight-management and lifestyle medicine.

To date, there is a wealth of data from observational and clinical studies establishing improvements in body weight using a healthy, plant-prominent diet, apparently attributable to reduced dietary energy density and increased postprandial energy expenditure.

In addition to weight loss, plant-based diets lead to favorable changes in overall nutrition, plasma lipid concentrations, blood glucose, and blood pressure, which lowers risk and, in some cases, reversed chronic comorbidities.

This can only happen when you take the initiative to get out of your own experience and into the experience of the other person. When you seek to truly understand, you are crossing the divide and expressing your ultimate desire to connect with the other person.

Parents and caregivers- if this is what you’re seeing at home, keep doing what you’re doing.

But don’t panic if your children don’t do this. Start with recognizing times you might have hurt their feelings, approach your child about it, and apologize. Then, when we notice patterns--such as yelling or criticizing our children-- we begin implanting strategies to regulate ourselves and not repeat patterns.

A child who is distressed, whether they’re whining or crying, has a need that is not being met.

We frame that however we would like- but the more room we give their feelings and we start decoding the behaviour and seeing underneath it. This is needs that are not being met. The sooner we can intervene appropriately, the less room that emotion is going to take.

Boundaries are a tool to help keep children safe and to navigate their worlds in a way that respectful to others and the natural world around them.

We can’t count on setting boundaries will dictate how our children will behave but it does give them a script and a pathway to follow. The more consistent and predictable we are with these scripts, the more they are reinforced and will “stick.”
