The answer to this week's Herbal Trivia question is Milk Thistle seed (Silybum marianum). "This seed indicated for liver damage due to hepatotoxic chemicals, viruses, alcohol or drugs. The Eclectics used the seed tincture for dry, scaly skin. The very young basal leaves and root are bitter but edible."
Milk thistle seed (Silybum marianum) contains the silymarin complex which are hepatoprotective flavolignans used to prevent and treat liver damage caused by chemicals, viruses or mushroom poisoning. It is indicated for cirrhosis of the liver as well as preventing drug-induced nephrotoxicity, psoriasis and as a supportive remedy for Hepatitis A, B or C. Milk thistle also acts as a cholagogue and a galactogogue. It combines well with burdock seed for dry, scaly skin conditions. The primary flavo-lignan in milk thistle, silybinin, is being studied for its ability in laboratory and animal studies to inhibit carcinogenesis, promote apoptosis and prevent metastasis in many types of cancer.
