I noted earlier this month that the winter was a quiet time on this feed, for some personal reasons, but also because I was focusing my energy on a new phase of personal growth, taking on a position as the Special Needs Coordinator at Grace Church in Ridgewood. While I love working with children in schools, homes, and clinics, I have always had a desire to pursue areas of Occupational Therapy that enhanced community integration and independence. As a Christian, I have long felt that providing a ministry for children and families who may need additional support was lacking in the greater church community. Over the past summer, Meghan Polanin, my long time friend and Director of Family Ministry, and I, both, separately, felt called to bring a Special Needs Ministry Program to Grace Church. I officially began this venture in January and we are already seeing a positive impact. Our mission is to provide an inclusive and affirming environment where every child feels welcome, safe, and supported, learning amongst their peers in our Children's Ministry Program. We are hoping to expand our program to offer parent support groups and parents'night out opportunities.
