On Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at 9:42 pm, the Wildwood Police Department received a 911 call for a reported disturbance involving multiple subjects in the 3300 block of the Boardwalk.
Upon their arrival, Officers were advised that a male suspect was observed swinging a knife at the store employees before fleeing the scene on foot. Witnesses further described a second male suspect pointing a firearm at the store employees as they attempted to close the roll up door to their store. This second suspect had also fled the area on foot.
Our Communication Officers gave descriptions of both accused to responding officers who quickly set up a multi block perimeter to ensure the safety of the public. Officers canvassed the area and found an unloaded green in color pellet gun in the vicinity. The gun was recovered and submitted into evidence.
During the search of the area the subject accused of brandishing the knife was observed inside a vehicle parked in the vicinity. The subject, who was later identified as 23-year-old Nicholas Gibson of Cape May Court House, NJ was detained on scene for investigative purposes. Further investigation by Wildwood P.D. Detectives discovered a box cutter knife clipped to Gibson’s waistband. Gibson was taken into custody at this point. As a result of this investigation conducted by the Wildwood Police Department Detective Division, Gibson was charged with 3rd degree Criminal Attempt/ Aggravated Assault, 3rd degree Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose, and 4th degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon.
On Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at 12:30 pm, two SLEO II Police Officers were returning to police headquarters when they observed the second suspect walking in the area of Montgomery and N.J. Avenues. The second suspect, who was identified as a juvenile male who was taken into custody and transported back to police headquarters. As a result of the continuing investigation, the juvenile suspect was charged with 2nd degree Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose, 2nd degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, 3rd degree Resisting by Flight, 4th degree Aggravated Assault, and 4th degree Obstruction.
Gibson was released on a summons complaint in accordance with the A.G. Guidelines, promulgated in connection with the Criminal Justice Bail Reform Policies and Directives. The juvenile defendant was transported and lodged in a juvenile intake facility. Both defendants were charged after a finding of probable cause and are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
