Myofascial Release

Myofascial release is a type of physical therapy often used to treat myofascial pain syndrome, a chronic pain disorder caused by sensitivity and tightness in your myofascial tissues.

Myofascial tissues surround and support the muscles throughout your body. The pain usually originates from specific points within your myofascial tissues called “trigger points.”

Myofascial release focuses on reducing pain by easing the tension and tightness in the trigger points. It’s not always easy to understand what trigger point is responsible for the pain. Localizing pain to a specific trigger point is very difficult. For that reason, myofascial release is often used over a broad area of muscle and tissue rather than at single points.

Who Might Benefit From Myofascial Release?

Patients with myofascial pain syndrome frequently benefit from this type of therapy. People who experience chronic headaches may also find relief from myofascial release. Gently massaging on tightened muscles in and around the neck and head may reduce headaches.

Some people with venous insufficiency, which occurs when blood pools in the deep veins of the leg, may also be candidates for myofascial release. During venous insufficiency, the blood pool stretches and eventually damages the veins in your legs. You may experience an aching and painful sensation in the affected leg. Myofascial release might be used in conjunction with other treatments to reduce the pooling and pain caused by venous insufficiency.

Sartorius!

The sartorius is the longest muscle in the body, spanning both the hip and the knee joints. The word sartorius is derived from the Latin word sartor, which translates to patcher, or tailor, due to how the individual will position their leg while working.

The sartorius muscle is a thin, long, superficial muscle in the anterior compartment of the thigh. It runs down the length of the thigh, runs over 2 joints—hip and knee joints and is the longest muscle in the human body.An exceptional length of this muscle often exceeds 50cm. In such long muscles not all muscle fibres run through the whole length of the muscle belly. It is estimated that at the most 30–50% of fibres run from tendon to tendon. The rest of them end intrafascicularly. The length of a single fibre is estimated at 35–45cm

Just like an S-shaped tape, the muscle belly twists around the anterior, and medial surface of the thigh. It passes behind the medial condyle of the femur to end in a tendon. The tendon, after taking an anterior curve joins with the tendon of the Gracilis and Semitendinosus in the pes anserinus before its final insertion.

A trigger point is a taut band of skeletal muscle inside a muscle group. Trigger points are tender to the touch and can refer pain to distant parts of the body. You may have regional, persistent pain resulting in a decreased range of motion in the affected muscles.

Trigger point therapy is a soft-tissue treatment that helps release tense, painful knots in your muscles and fascia (web of connective tissue). Components of trigger point therapy may include sustained pressure, posture and movement correction, electrical stimulation, dry needling, and massage.

What Are Trigger Points?
Trigger points feel like little marbles or knots just under your skin. When pressing on trigger points, many people feel no pain or discomfort. Sometimes, trigger points become very sensitive, and some people feel significant pain in areas where they have trigger points.

Passive and Active Trigger Points
There are two types of trigger points: active and passive.

Passive trigger points simply hurt at their exact location. If you have a painful muscle knot in your hamstring and someone presses on it, the pain will be felt right where the pressure is on the knot. An active trigger point refers to pain to another part of the body. If someone presses on an active trigger point in your shoulder, you may feel pain in your shoulder along with symptoms in your chest or arm.

Regardless of the type of trigger point you have, you may benefit from massage therapy to help manage your problem.

Muscle Monday!!

The sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) is one of the largest and most superficial cervical muscles. The primary actions of the muscle are rotation of the head to the opposite side and flexion of the neck. The sternocleidomastoid is innervated by the accessory nerve.

The sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) is one of over 20 pairs of muscles acting on the neck. The SCM has dual innervation and multiple functions. It is a superficially palpable muscle with importance as an anatomical landmark within the neck region and as part of neuromuscular pathologies such as torticollis.

Origin: Manubrium and medial portion of the clavicle
Insertion: Mastoid process of the temporal bone, superior nuchal line.

Actions: Unilaterally: contralateral cervical rotation, ipsilateral cervical flexion Bilaterally: cervical flexion, elevation of sternum and assists in forced inhalation.

Technique Tuesday !!

A Bowen treatment consists of sequences of small moves at varying pressures, each at a specific site on the body. The treatment is pleasant – therapists use light, cross-fibre manoeuvres of muscle, tendon or ligament with no forceful manipulation.

A treatment will typically last between 30 minutes and one hour. It can be provided through a layer of light clothing, although you may be asked to remove heavy or thick garments. During this time, the therapist may leave the room for periods of two to five minutes at a time. This allows time for your body to respond to the treatment and for the necessary changes to occur in your body before commencing the next sequence of moves.

What you can expect

Bowen is not necessarily an ongoing therapy. The person may experience relief after just the first session and significant resolution or recovery within three sessions. However, chronic or long-standing conditions or repeat injury may require additional treatments and if symptoms do not resolve, you should see your doctor. Many people with long term chronic conditions such as Parkinson’s Disease find benefits from attending regular Bowen treatments as part of their continuing treatment plan.

Pectoralis Major

The pectoralis major is the superior most and largest muscle of the anterior chest wall. It is a thick, fan-shaped muscle that lies underneath the breast tissue and forms the anterior wall of the axilla. The pectoralis major is the most superficial muscle in the pectoral region. There are 2 heads of the pectoralis major, the clavicular and the sternocostal, which reference their area of origin.

Origin: The pectoralis makor consists of two heads; the clavicular and sternocostal head :

Clavicular head – originates from the anterior surface of the medial half of clavicle.
Sternocostal head – is the larger of the two heads and originates from :
The anterior surface of the manubrium and body of sternum,
The anterior surface of the superior six costal cartilages.
Superior part of the aponeurosis of external oblique muscle.

Insertion:
The upper and lower fibers of pectoralis major insert to the crest of greater tubercle of the humerus. Upper fibers are more anterior and caudal on the crest, while posterior fibers twist on themselves and are more posterior and cranial than the upper fibers.

Function: The function of the pectoralis major is 3-fold and dependent on which heads of muscles are involved

With the origin fixed, the pectoralis major adducts, medially rotates, and transversely adducts arm at glenohumeral joint.
It assists in flexion of the arm (via its clavicular head)
It assists in extension of the arm (via the sternocostal head) at the glenohumeral joint.
It depresses the shoulder girdle at acrimioclavicular and sternoclavicular joints.
With the insertion fixed, it may assist in elevating thorax, as in forced inspiration. It is considered as an accessory muscle of inspiration.
In crutch-walking or parallel-bar work, it will assist in supporting the weight of the body.
