Precision agriculture takes some of the “luck” out of farming, even on St. Patrick’s Day. GPS guidance, variable rate application, and smart field mapping help farmers make every acre count. A little luck never hurts, but good wheat and good farming matter more.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to the growers who make their own luck in the field. 🌱🍀

Wheat travels far before it reaches the world market, and barges make that journey efficient. One barge can move as much wheat as nearly 40 railcars or more than 100 trucks, easing pressure on roadways and keeping shipping costs competitive. This river system supports farmers and helps PNW wheat reach global customers.

Today we celebrate the women who grow, manage, research, and advocate for wheat across Washington. Agriculture is stronger because of your leadership and the innovation you bring to the field. Crop advisor Gracie Dickerson shares how precision agriculture tools are helping Washington wheat farmers work smarter, including the use of variable rate fertilizer applications that improve efficiency and support healthier crops.

Women are shaping the future of farming, and precision ag is one of the many ways they are driving progress in our fields every day.

Here is something most people never learn in school.
Wheat actually comes in two planting seasons. Winter wheat is planted in the fall, grows a little, then goes dormant until warm soil wakes it back up. That extra growing time means stronger yields. Spring wheat is planted once soils heat up and is often used to rotate fields, break pest cycles, and add flexibility when moisture is limited. In very arid climates, farmers often cannot support both, so they rely on the crop that fits their rainfall. Different timing, same level of care in every acre.
