This is tragic. Unfortunately, it’s not as rare as we’d like to believe. So many families ask for help and are denied. Why? It’s because of money. Counties don’t want to pay. When multiple professionals recommend out of home therapeutic placement and the child is a danger to the family it is in no one’s best interest for that child to remain in the home. Whenever possible it’s best for kids to be in the home, but sometimes that is not safe, for anyone. I have watched families beg for help. I’ve seen Psychiatrists recommend out of home placement, all other services fail, and counties still refuse. This is the result.
In the early morning hours of January 13, 2026, what began as a quiet birthday celebration in Duncannon Borough, Pennsylvania, ended in tragedy.
Just after midnight, 11-year-old Clayton Dietz had his birthday acknowledged at home by his adoptive parents.
According to court documents, his father, Douglas Dietz, later told him it was time for bed and confiscated his Nintendo Switch. Investigators say Clayton became upset.
Around 3:20 a.m., Douglas Dietz's wife woke to a loud noise and what she initially described as a smell resembling fireworks. When she tried to wake her husband, he did not respond. Turning on the light, she realized the sound she thought was dripping water was blood.
Moments later, Clayton entered the room and told her his father was d*ad.
Police responded to the home on South Market Street and found Douglas Dietz in bed with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Authorities said the parents' bedroom was connected to Clayton's by a closet.
According to investigators, Clayton admitted to shooting his father. He told police he located the key to the gun safe in his father's drawer while searching for his confiscated gaming console. He removed a revolver, loaded it, walked to his father's side of the bed, and fired while his father was sleeping. When asked what he believed would happen after pulling the trigger, Clayton reportedly said he had been angry and did not think about the consequences.
During interviews, he made statements acknowledging what he had done and expressing distress. Authorities also noted visible minor injuries on his face at the time of questioning. A family acquaintance stated that Clayton had been diagnosed with autism and that behavioral challenges had intensified in the previous year. Reports indicated that requests had been made to transfer him to a specialized behavioral education program.
Clayton Dietz has been charged as an adult with criminal homicide. Bail was denied, and he is being held at Perry County Prison as the case moves through the court system. The incident has sparked intense discussion about juvenile justice, mental health support, firearm access, and how a domestic conflict escalated into irreversible violence in the early hours of a child's birthday.
