EVERYONE can do something!

STOP! ✋🏽

Please don’t scroll by thinking because you can’t foster or adopt you can’t do anything—because you can. Everyone can.

May is National Foster Care Awarness Month & it is a chance for you to see how to integrate yourself into our world.

Many will do nothing because they simply don't know what to do.

We know not everyone is going to be called to foster care or adoption, or even respite care & babysitting—but you can still do so much for those who are.

So many people see foster parents as superheroes who can do it all, but we are not & we cannot do it without your help.

Foster parents often feel isolated, buried in the trenches & to be honest—a lot of times fear how we will survive the day. Mounds of paperwork & medical appointments & trauma behaviors, Court dates, parent visits, investigations, social workers, lawyers & I could go on & on but you get the point.

You don't have to do it all, but you can do something because each kind gesture & every act of compassion says to us "I see you, I appreciate you & I'm here for you."

What can you do this month to help?

It's amazing how talking helps. But, the process of finding the words to express thoughts/feelings can help kickstart the healing process.

Some days as a Certified Parent Peer Specialist are really tough and some days are extra rewarding. Today was a final meeting with a family I’ve been supporting for 4 years. We read the note from our first meeting and acknowledged the positive change in the family over the four years. It was inspiring and powerful for them and for me.

My Why!

Michelle Uetz has been an educator since 2001. She now uses her education, personal, and family experience, to advocate for families who struggle with mental illness. Michelle has experienced depression and anxiety herself, and learned to manage it. She has taught students with emotional and behavioral disabilities. Michelle helped her sister through her struggles with mental illness, and domestic violence, which ultimately lead to her sister's su***de in 2016. Later in 2016, Michelle and her husband obtained guardianship her cousin’s two girls at the ages of 13 and 8. These girls joined their family of three boys. The girls were soon diagnosed with mental illness from the trauma that they had experienced in early childhood. While the girls have moved on to other placement she and her husband learned a great deal about parenting children who have a history of trauma with mental illness and substance use issues. Michelle has made it her mission to support, educate, and advocate for parents who are struggling to raise a child with mental illness and/or substance use issues. She helps parents in their homes, with school issues, in crisis, and in finding the resources they need. As this business grows and other Certified Parent Peer Specialists join Michelle in this mission they will have the same passion and vision to help parents and children. Michelle also works to create awareness of mental illness, su***de, domestic violence, healthy relationships, and sexuality.
