Toxic Tuesday: ORAL INFECTION CONNECTED TO BREAST CANCER
A new study shows that an oral bacterium may promote breast cancer development and spread. Groundbreaking research from Johns Hopkins Medicine shows that a common oral microbe, Fusobacterium nucleatum, often linked with periodontal (gum) disease and root canals, may travel through the bloodstream and lymphatic vessels, settle in breast tissue, and actively promote DNA damage, tumor growth, and cancer spread.

This study provides the first solid evidence that an oral bacterium doesn’t just live in your mouth. It can impact organs far away.

The researchers found that F. nucleatum can alter how cells behave, causing inflammation and accelerating cancer progression, especially in breast cells with genetic vulnerability (like BRCA1 mutations). While this work is still early and more research is ongoing, it demonstrates a powerful connection between oral health and cancer risk reminding us that the mouth truly is a gateway to the rest of the body.

As a practical perspective, of the hundreds of root canals I have removed and sent in for DNA testing, almost every sample tests positive for F. nucleatum.

If inflammation and bacterial imbalance in the mouth can influence distant tissues, then prevention matters! This goes beyond daily brushing and flossing and regular dental cleanings. Dental issues that trigger your immune system such as gum disease, tooth decay, and root canals may increase your risk for cancer. To work with one of the most experienced Biological Dentists in the world, reach out to our team at Blodgett Dental Care to learn how we can help you ensure that your mouth is not contributing to whole-body diseases such as cancer.

2016

I’m not always one to stay on top of social media or trends, but I saw this one and loved it and as I went back to look at my pictures from 2016 I was blown away by how much has happened in the past 10 years.

I had conceived in 2016 only to have my second miscarriage seven weeks after all around the same time we had been going through the process of selling selling our condo and moving into our first house that we got together.

it was also the one year anniversary of losing my dad to cancer( and then a month after my dad passed away having had my first miscarriage in April 2015.)

After we moved into our home, I was so excited about a garden that the previous homeowners had kept really good care of the soil.

We were praying about what to do since we had now had two miscarriages and were encouraged to do IVF through a specialist. We took some time and prayed together and decided that personally for us that was not the route we were to go at that time.

For a year, I had kept hearing about a particular doctor and decided to get a second opinion . This doctor did not feel that ivf was the first step and had recommended an IUI which I had in the fall of 2016. A few days before I was set to go out to a large Acupuncture conference out in San Diego. I found out that I had conceived.

Naturally, I was nervous because of my history but enjoyed my trip and then just a week later my husband and I had a vacation planned to San Francisco. By the end of 2016 we had announced to our friends and family that we were pregnant and I had begun making plans in office renovations to a brand new office and Commack.

Reflecting back on just that year alone, I see all of the hardships, blessings, trials, and new things to come. Through every season, God was and continues to be faithful.

Taiwanese researchers discovered acupuncture triggering stem cell release healing damaged organs naturally. Scientists at China Medical University found that electroacupuncture at specific meridian points stimulates bone marrow to release mesenchymal stem cells into circulation, which then migrate to injured organs and promote tissue repair. This mechanism explains acupuncture's therapeutic effects through measurable biological processes rather than placebo.

Traditional Chinese medicine has used acupuncture for thousands of years, but Western medicine dismissed it as placebo due to lack of biological mechanism. Taiwanese researchers using advanced imaging and cellular tracking discovered that needle stimulation at specific points triggers measurable stem cell mobilization—providing the first clear biological explanation for acupuncture's effects.

Electroacupuncture (needles with mild electrical current) at ST36 (Zusanli point) and GV20 (Baihui point) causes a 300% increase in circulating stem cells within 24 hours. These mobilized stem cells express homing signals drawing them to damaged tissues—injured liver, heart, kidneys, or brain—where they differentiate into organ-specific cells and release healing factors. It's like acupuncture triggers the body's internal repair dispatch system.

Stroke patients receiving electroacupuncture within 48 hours of stroke showed 40% better functional recovery than those receiving standard care alone. Liver cirrhosis patients showed reduced fibrosis markers. Heart attack survivors demonstrated improved cardiac function. The mechanism is entirely biological—traced stem cells from bone marrow to damaged organs. Skeptical Western physicians are reconsidering acupuncture given this mechanistic evidence. We're discovering that ancient healing practices work through sophisticated biological mechanisms science is only now capable of detecting.

Reflect and Recharge for the New Year!

Winter is the season for introspection in Chinese Medicine. It’s the perfect time to reflect on the year behind you and set gentle intentions for the year ahead—not the “do everything perfectly” kind of resolutions, but the “what would nourish me?” kind. For me, this means taking an inventory and listening to my body. Sometimes what nourishes me is to rest. Sometimes what nourishes me is to move. My body tells me what KIND of movement. And sometimes, let’s be honest, I just get really cranky and that’s code for it’s time to move OR rest. It might be as simple as adding 15 minutes of sleep a night, making a point of staying connected with loved ones by sending them funny memes or texts, or dedicating more time to nourishing activities like cooking and reading.

Winter reminds me that growth happens even in stillness. What’s one intention you’re carrying into the new year? I’d love to hear how you’re nurturing yourself as we move through this season.

In Chinese Medicine, winter is a time to slow down and nurture yourself. The season is all about conserving energy, just like nature does—trees stop growing, animals hibernate, and the world feels quieter. It’s the time of year when seeds gather their strength, before flourishing into their full expression in spring and summer.

I try to embrace this rhythm by allowing myself more rest, staying cozy, and saying no to things that drain my energy. It’s not laziness; it’s intentional renewal. Our bodies and minds need this pause to recharge. Yes, it’s safe–essential really–to take it easy this time of the year. The dividends will pay off for the entire year!!

What’s one way you can embrace rest this winter? Maybe it’s an early bedtime, a warm cup of chamomile and goji berry tea, or simply giving yourself permission to pause. What do you want to say no to this week?

Our story

Hi!

My name is Melissa Peters and I began my studies in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine in 2005. It has been such an incredible and life-changing journey. In 2010, I graduated from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in NYC and started my own practice. In 2011, I opened Wellspring of Life Acupuncture to service my local community in Commack and the surrounding area.

I fell in love with Chinese medicine for many reasons, but number one is how the entire person is always taken into account: body, mind, & spirit. My background is in Psychology and I still find it fascinating how the issues of the mind affect the body and vice versa. Acupuncture and herbal medicine have been treating and helping people for literally thousands of years. My focus has become women’s health as well as emotional health. We do commonly treat back pain, headaches, digestive issues, and other symptoms as well.

If you would like to know more information or if you are wondering if acupuncture can help you, please feel free to contact me at 631-896-0403 or melissa@wolacupuncture.com.
