Families of people with motor disabilities that make it difficult to speak out loud are fighting to protect a form of communication using letterboards and keyboard. But opponents say some of the methods aren't backed by science, and could lead to harm. NBC News' Vicky Nguyen reports.

New York’s Communication Bill of Rights [Assembly Bill A7363C] would legally protect every person’s right to use their preferred method of communication.

Without this bill, spellers, typers, and text-based communicators can be denied their primary most effective method of AAC.

Spellers everywhere have proved what’s possible when they are given access. Now we need New York to protect that access.

Communication is a human right.
