I love knitting and creating fabric, texture and using color. After I had started experiencing arm pain in my early 20s, I had to stop knitting. During those years, I even sought an acupuncturist who had helped others manage arm pain with knitting. When I began to knit again, I did so with more awareness of how to do it within my limitations. Do you ever notice that despite the assumption to the opposite, limitations and boundaries are important with chronic pain and things you love? My favorite acupuncture joke is that I won’t do certain needle crafts that are too much like acupuncture. Think needle felting and embroidery, no thank you, lol. 😂

In my 20s I was working in laboratory research and volunteering as an HIV test counselor. I really liked working with clients on their health goals and wanted to do more of it. At the same time I was dealing with chronic pain. I got many treatments with acupuncture, physical therapy, chiropractic, Feldenkrais. and you know what, nothing really worked until I left my job. So there you have it’s I’m not someone who had an immediate “aha” moment with my current work. But I knew I liked guiding people on their health and I loved systems, so I chose acupuncture as a profession. Since then, I’ve had many “aha” moments and so have my patients.
