Inland Empire Maternal Mental Health Collaborative

Inland Empire Maternal Mental Health Collaborative Committed to raising awareness and increasing access for women and their families in need of mental health services during and after pregnancy.

Our collaborative formed after the alleged murder of a 17 month old boy by his mother in Riverside County. News reports indicated that she may have been suffering from a mental health disorder. Many of us in the community became concerned that this may have been the result of a postpartum mood disorder. At that time there were no specialized support groups or treatment services for women suffering from perinatal and/or postpartum mood disorders in Riverside County and San Antonio Hospital had the only support group in San Bernardino County. We wanted to change this. Our vision is to promote maternal and family mental health by raising awareness, decreasing stigma and providing effective resources for women experiencing perinatal mood disorders.

Consistent with a national trend, a growing number of California hospitals have stopped offering maternity care. This has increased some women's travel time to hospitals with maternity services, a particular concern in rural parts of the state.
