Our guest of honor at last week's Annual Meeting was Director Kristin Sousa of the RI Medicaid program (Rhode Island Executive Office of Health and Human Services ), who accepted a PACE-RI Champion award.

Director Sousa and her team (including Deputy Director John Bonin, who was also in attendance) make sure that all Rhode Island residents have access to affordable, quality care—including people enrolled in PACE.

Like her predecessors at the Medicaid office who supported us 20 years ago, Director Sousa has recognized that most elders want to remain safe at home in the community as they age. She has admirably devoted her career to helping improve the quality of life for others, and we are incredibly grateful she and her colleagues have been steadfast supporters of PACE since its earliest days.

Director Sousa has always brought a patient and kind touch to her work and we were honored to celebrate with her. Special thanks to the entire Medicaid team for believing in PACE and continuing to help turn our innovative vision into reality.

"Over the past two decades, PACE-RI has been a life-changing resource for seniors across Rhode Island . . . you represent the best of Rhode Island!"

We want to give a special thank you to Senator Jack Reed, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Governor Dan McKee and National PACE Association CEO Shawn Bloom for messages of their encouragement as we celebrate 20 years of service.

Our remarkable 2025 Caregiver of the Year is Marleny Brown (center right).

Marleny retired in order to care for her mother full time. Even while juggling life's demands, Marleny has always stayed engaged and has a good sense of humor when working with PACE-RI staff. She keeps Almira connected, active, and dressed to the nines whenever she attends our East Providence day center.

Marleny is an active participant in her Caregiver Support Group. She approaches caregiving with extraordinary kindness, consistency, and grace. Her partnership with PACE-R shows what is possible when dedication and community come together to provide resources far beyond what was initially thought possible.

Our amazing 2025 Academic Partner of the Year is The Met High School, Providence and Newport, RI.

Advisor Kelly Andreoni (left) and Principal Arthur Baraf (right) were onsite at our recent Annual Meeting to accept the award.

Since 2023, Met students with career interests ranging from medicine, nursing, life enrichment, and culinary arts have interned at PACE-RI. Each semester, they learn valuable skills and built personal relationships within our community.

Thanks to the Met School, our staff members have the opportunity to mentor the next generation of health care workers. Our participants love spending time with students and trading stories with them.

Our impactful 2025 Community Partner is Tamarisk Senior Living.

Executive Director Helayne Goldstein-Ramirez (left) and Director of Resident Life Leigh-Ann Renfro RN (right) accepted the award on behalf of their team at our recent Annual Meeting.

When a participant needs to leave their home and move into an assisted
living facility, it can be intimidating for them and their families.

There are many details involved, some of which can be anticipated, and
some that cannot be. Tamarisk works hard to make the transition as easy as
possible with compassion, professionalism, and kindness.

Today, we have 16 participants who call Tamarisk home. They appreciate the beautifully designed space and Tamarisk's attentive care team, which works closely with our PACE-RI clinicians to ensure our older adults can continue to live vibrantly.

Our deserving 2025 Business Partner of the Year is Intus Care.

We have a longstanding relationship with Intus, which was founded in 2019 by a group of Brown University undergraduates. Two of the founders—CEO Robbie Felton (center) and CTO Alex Rothberg (left)—came onsite to accept the award.

PACE-RI was an early incubator for IntusCare's software solutions. In 2020, we were the first organization to adopt the Population Health Analytics tool, which helps identify clinical risks for PACE participants and creates valuable action plans based on the data.

This year, we celebrated another shared milestone: being the first organization to use CareHub, a new electronic medical record designed for the needs of PACE programs.

We are thankful for our continued partnership, which shows how innovation in the Ocean State makes an outsized impact on the PACE community nationwide.

Today, we held our 2025 Annual Meeting. This year’s event was especially meaningful as we looked back on our accomplishments as an organization over the past 20 years.

A special anniversary video honored the history of PACE-RI and highlighted powerful stories of our program’s impact on older adults. We also watched video messages of encouragement from elected officials and community supporters.

We celebrated the dedication of outgoing board members Kim Denny and Ed D’Arrezo, who both served our organization for nearly a decade.

We recognized Medicaid Director Kristin Sousa as a PACE-RI Champion and presented external awards to our academic, business, caregiver, and community partners.

Two standout staff members received our Winoker and Florence Madison Awards, and we gave special gifts to staff celebrating 5, 10, 15 and 20 years of service.

Over the coming days, we’ll be spotlighting each award recipient and sharing how they have made a difference for the PACE-RI community.

Each year, members of our board pass out baskets of pantry items for participants in need of extra support during the holiday season.

Here's what Board Chair Danielle Kopf had to share about her experience.

"It's always good to give back to those in need this time of year. I like to get my boys involved so they can have the same experience. It makes the work we do as a board more real. It's great to see how appreciative the participants are and how much they love PACE."

Special thanks to Anne the Plumber for donating pantry items for our Thanksgiving baskets for the fourth year running!

“My mother was actually a participant at PACE, and they did such a good job with her,” said Anne-Marie Flores. “I believe in giving back to the people who helped you and passing it forward. I always like to give back to elderly who helped us get to where we are today.”

Sacred Flame Belly Dance has performed at PACE-RI for more than 13 years. They are among our participants' favorite guests.

This time around, belly dancers Deb and Holly agreed to lead a special dance class for our older adults at PACE-Woonsocket.

"It was a morning filled with scarves, movement and lots of laughter," said Life Enrichmeent Lead Jenn Wood. "Our knowledgeable instructors were able to adapt the moves so that participants of all levels of function were able to join in on the fun!"

This week, we celebrated 20 years of PACE-RI with carnival events for our participants!

From whack-a-mole in Providence to bobbing for apples in Woonsocket, older adults across our centers were able to relive childhood memories of going to the fair.
